View Full Version : Ultimo in my Hands :)
Oh yes, I now have 1 in my sticky palms.
Just about to install blackhole image on it (as no vix to test yet).
Will let you know how it is when i've got it up and running propperly :)
Don't you worry. ViX is almost ready to release and with the Linux 3.1.1 kernel fully working too.
How much you pay for it mate
get sum pics up, would be nice to see some more pics

No probs.
It's nice to see that the hdd tray will take a 2.5" drive nice and easy too, although the power lead for the hdd could be a touch longer.
How about some pics of that gorgeous display:D
Couple more for the time being
Hi,is the display color or just the one only? Thanks.

Thanks for the great pics Ev0 nice to see the 2.5 drives don't need a adapter
cant wait to get mine in the new year :zoom:

3rd tuner is sat tuner, as that was only option they had in stock.
However on thinking about it, as the hybrid dvb c/t tuner doesn't support T2 then I am better off with 3rd sat tuner anyway.
Yeh the dongle is nice.

Yeh I will prob get 1 in the near future, but I think i've spent enough for today lol.

I don't really need 4, i'll use 2 feeds from mini dish and 1 from motor, to save messing with diseqc switch's.
Oh btw, unless i've managed to pick up a beta box, they don't have an oled display, it's vfd still.
And I can't get the picon's to work (not that I really know how to get them working anyway).
Yeh thats wht im planning but 3 from minidish n 1 from motorised as i do more recordings on sly uk than i ever do on motor lol
Have u got specific oled picons for ultimo as im sure they require special ones

Either that, or the blackhole image doesn't support them yet.
No probs.

Will you say the power cable is a tight fit on the board,or just ok?
cheers....
It's a tight fit mate, it won't come out easily, but it could do with an extra 1 or 2mm in length as it only just reach's (with a 2.5" drive fitted).
I think it was meant for 3.5inch hdd. They musta forgot about 2.5inch lol

not yet mate but soon
as for VFd picons you cant use standard picons they need to be specially made to comply with ultimo standards

As the display supports graphics it's OLED; VFD doesn't do that.

Fair enough, I was just reading what it says on the back of the box.:)
Just USB'd BH 1.6.6 to it and the machine keeps rebooting. Strange ?
Will try re-flashing again and see what it does. If not will have to try Vti to see if that works ?

BH 1.6.7 kernal 3.1.1 beta2 works fine.
Right got the oled picon's working, they look wicked, but the vti image imo is crap.
Very slow and buggy, so as much as I enjoyed the picon's it's back to Blackhole for the moment :)

what picons are VTI using?
BH 1.6.7 kernal 3.1.1 beta2 works fine.
Yes 1.6.7 is fine, I was trying 1.6.6 before which just plain refused to boot.
Plugged in a DVB C/T tuner and a HDD and all sorted now. Have to say this is one wicked machine and it looks stunning.
Loved my Duo but if you're seriously into satellite then Ultimo is defo the receiver to have. Well done VU+:)
On another note if you like playing with boxes then the Azbox Elite/Premiums have just been given a whole new lease of life running E2. Yes, that's right don't laugh, Azbox ! Running Spaze 2.0 Quantum E2 on them is very impressive....as a pure linux rx it's just come back from the dead.
Try the vix image for ultimo ;-)

Just having a go now :D
Hi,did it come with a fan control module installed?
I'm sure these boxes are cool enough not to have one fitted....:)

@Ev0
Wher did you get the OLED picons from, Gonna need these when i get mine :-)

Some that you can download from there "panel"

Not that I noticed, but tbh I didn't look too closely.

As above they were avaliable to download from the vti panel within the image.
However I am currently messing with the nice new VIX image, and that should have some picons in it somewhere too :D

The Ultimo comes with a temperature controlled fan. The tuners produce quite a lot of heat; I can assure you the fan is indeed needed.
Under normal circumstances the fan runs rather slow, one can hardly hear it.
A fancontrol setting allows you to set it to "off" in standby.
I would like just ask you if tuner B is working with channels SR 30000 ???
The same problem have clarketech ET 9000/9100/9200 and dreambox 7020HD.

Never had the problem with my duo, but sure will test a few channels later for you (although I have motor set as tuner C at the moment).

Yep. no problem.
Tuner C seems fine with 30000 SR channels too

Yes it has a fan fitted, runs quite quiet as well but I imagine that maybe fan dependent. Revolutions are low so don't really expect noise problems.
You can set fan control to on/of in for standby as well.
Loving BH at the moment but see that VIX 3.1.1 is out today, great stuff so when I get a moment will try that. Haven't tried any picons just yet as trying to get into the meat and bones of this receiver.
Must say it is hugely impressive but one thing I'm not so keen on so far is the remote ! It sure looks cool but it's not as comfortable as the one you get with duo/uno. I know the one with the uno is programmable so will try to see if that can work with the Ultimo but doesn't look like it can ?

Glad i'm not the only one thinking that with the remote.
Afaik the Uno remote will work with the ultimo too :D
You csn try by going into remote control code in system settings and see if changing the code to get uno/duo/solo remote to work

Yeh changing to 1 makes my duo remote work :)
As far as i am aware the uno remote is essentially a multi remote, so with the correct code it should work on the ultimo just as it should with any Vu box, dont quote me on that yet though.

UNO & Ultimo are both set to R/C code 2, so both remotes can be used for both receivers.

yeah i thought so but was not totally sure so i did not post.

Hi EvO, I'm, glad we're both on the same wave length ! The Ultimo remote is beautiful, but as I have large hands the Uno suits me better.
I have the original Duo remote which is not programmable and the Uno which is. I had changed my Uno to RC1 to work with the Duo. I shall try re-setting the Uno one back to RC2 a bit later on.
From above the uno remote should work as it is.
The duo remote requires you to change the code on the box from 2 to 1.
Hi EvO, the Uno remote is programmable. It comes as RC2 as default but I changed it to RC1 to work with my Duo.
I shall simply revert the remote (hardware) back to RC2 default.

Sorry I am with you now ;)
I will stick with the ultimo remote for a bit longer (didn't get on with the duo remote when I first got it, as I was used to dreambox remote), but after a week or 2, it suddenly felt right if you know what I mean
Yes Ultimo is very slick, I just find some of the buttons on the peripheral of the body a little hard to get on with as I have large hands.
This of course is a purely personal thing as the remote itself is stunning otherwise :)

Ultimo\ s R/C most certenly is not the best there is. I heard people saying it to get more easy to use (less hard pushing) after using it a couple of days.
TBH: I never use any R/C that comes with a box; none can beat the ones in my footer (any manufacturer reading this? Give us a Logitech next time!).
That is a very valid point and it's one I've thought about for many years now.
No matter how nice a receiver or box or whatever, ultimately the users experience of it is 99% via a remote control.
It is the 'user' front end of any equipment and the value of this is so important that it should not be lost on any manufacturer really.
You will note that all the receivers that do really well also have ergonomic remote controls. The very best ones take little time to get used to and feel very natural in hand.
On the other hand you get some really nice receivers and the remote controls are tacky, awkward and uncomfortable making use and navigation a pain.
My current personal favourites are the Spiderbox remotes, well built, ergonomic, nice button layout and high quality build.

Whatever how good your R/C is, once used the activity based Harmony you will never use anything else.
Ok can confirm the Vu+ Uno remote works perfectly fine with the Ultimo.

Nah, still prefer the oem remotes myself...
I like the harmony for a quick "do summat on all boxes/tv/surround", but, as a full use, the oem suits me best...

I love my harmony 900 would be totally lost without it and so would all my a/v equipment lol thank god for 1 remote

I probably haven't taken full use of all settings/properties for it, but tbh, I don't want to use the activities that much... It might just be the remote I have (525), but it doesn't work too well with the sat boxes...

Hmmm, having a bunch of 555's here (almost the same as the 525) I can assure you they are the best Logitech ever made (in fact Logitech didn't; it's been designed by the original company that Logitech has taken over). It even has the Sound and Picture buttons: super!
Once used to activity's you never want to talk to devices any more.
