View Full Version : Odd freezing problem on playback
Hi all, posting in here as I'm using ViX image, but problem is probably nothing to do with the image.
Last few nights when playing back recorded programs, occasionally (not often) I get the odd graphical glitch.
It's only happened in the last week on both the original and the 1.1.
Sometimes I will be playing back a recording and it will simply hang. I have to press the stop key and restart it. I've done tests when this happens and it's not a problem with the data.
To put it another way, i start watching a program, it hangs say 10 mins into it. I stop and restart it, it plays the rest fine. Then as an experiment, I re-watched the program from the beginning, this time it didn't hang at all.
Sometimes I will get a little boxing (squares as though signal isn't being received properly) and a couple of times, the pic and sound has stuttered.
This isn't happening very often, it seems to be happening (although cant verify this 100%) when the box is also recording something else.
Have removed my external drive to eliminate any conflicts there.
Have only used 120GB of my 1TB drive (Samsung EcoGreen F2 1TB Hard Drive SATAII 32MB Cache) and have NOT got permanent time shift turned on.
Any suggestions please?
Thanks
Does this happen on both FTA and premium channel recordings?
Not tried it on premium, had it on BBC1 & 3, Ch 4.
I'm also having this problem as well on Playback.
I've had a few recorded films from Sky Movies Channels, and FTA Stuff like the Merlin from BBC 1.
Sometimes they freeze and start to breakup.
Not sure if it is something to do with the updates drivers, as I only noticed it the other day.
Sometimes the whole recording will just freeze and I need to pause rewind and then play again to get it working.
But the freezing and pixelating isn't on the orginal recording as a second play sometimes plays the whole lot ok.
I can't seem to find a patten.
I've got to admit, I dont get any freezing issues. Maybe try re-initializing your HDD.
I'll try and give that ago later.
Just got alot on the HDD that I don't really want to loose at the moment, :(

Same here. Will ftp my 120GB of data to my PC and try later, although I would have thought if there was a problem with the HD, it would be the same each time the file is played back?
Also odd that it's recently started happening to someone else too?
Over 700GB of the HD has never been touched plus Linux systems shouldn't suffer the same problems as Windows where you need to defrag.
Something else I've noticed is that occasionally (just happened twice in 15 mins, but did it just a couple of times over the whole of last night) the egg timer appears for a second or two spinning?
Today this was on CH4+1, nothing being recorded, no timeshift.
I'm using CCcam 2.14 with a local Sky card and am not sharing.
Some of the log is below. last thing I did at around 9:33 was change to ch5.

Have either of you used the fix to try and show ecm times?! That caused problems for me when I put the fix on, exactly the same as what you're describing. When I removed it, it worked perfectly...
Also, have you got any plugins running?! Could be possible that the plugins are causing the problems...
Ojustaboo, looks like it's trying to do some timeshifting from that log, are you sure you haven't enabled permanent timeshift?!
As for egg timers appearing, that can happen because of the autotimer plugin. It searches in the background for recordings, and can cause the spinning cogs...
No.
I've not got the fix installed.
I'm just running the New ViX Image.
CCcam2.1.3
Oscam.100.3199
I'm running PTS to USB Stick, which also seems to have the problem as well. If I try and playback a recording I've been watching and then rewind.
So I don't think it's anything to do with the HDD itself more a problem of one of the Drovers I've installed.
I updated to the 4.3.3 Drivers yesterday, but I'm sure the problem was happening before this.
Other things I can think I've downloaded are
Sherlock. (which I only use for the bitrate viewer)
I'm using a FTV Sky Card and a Tring+ Card which is local only.
On the Autotimers I have 3 Setup, and I'm getting my EPG Data from a mixture of RyVIX (some non 28.2) and Cool EPG for 28.2.
My problems don't seem to be caused if anything is being recorded they just seem to happen?

Hi. No haven't used the fix.
Triple checked, permanent time shift is disabled.
I am using the auto timer so that explains that one, I also program the auto timer to exclude all days I don't want a program recorded, presume that doesn't slow things down.
Here's a list of the plugins I have installed according to the plugins and software management pages, not installed anything manually (ie not installed via ipkg)
Skin Selector
Video Enhancement
Video tune
Video Mode
Auto Timer
EPG Search
Auto resolution (not enabled at present)
CD Info
DVD player
Media Player
Picture Player
Virtual Zap
Web interface
Youtube player
Network browser
Network Wizard
Wireless lan (will remove as use ethernet cable)
Cutlisteditor
IMdb
Movie cut
Positionier setup
skin selector
software manager
VLC player
Audio Sync
Fan control (turned off)
File Browser
Hot Plug
Media Scanner
Network Wizard
Startup service
Also have CCam2.1.4 running on auto start.
Might try reflashing see if that helps

It was probably a coincidence for me, just happened to have things recording over the past few evenings.
It does look like your having the same problem as me. I haven't installed the new drivers.
I'm not using Sherlock.
I have a legitimate Sky card with all entertainment packages (not HD, movies or sport) and am not sharing.
Wondering whether the Autotimer might be the culprit? We're both using it and if that's causing the egg timer to sometimes appear on my screen, then maybe if I'm playing back a movie, instead of the timer appearing, it freezes?
Yesterday before I changed the time to 5am, Coolepg was set to update at around 4pm. When it did this, it froze the channel for about a min or so while it did the imports. Just mentioning this on the off chance it shows any relevance.
I've got mine to download the RyVox stuff at 05:45 and the Cool EPG at 07:00.
I've not noticed the Egg Timer appearing, but we do seem to be having the same sort of problems.
Ojustaboo
Did you have any problems when you flashed the Image at all?
Did you get the message to say to remove the USB and reboot when you installed?
As I never got this mine stayed on programming, but after a poweroff and on again I did have the new image installed.

I've not got any auto timers programmed in on mine at the mo... If possible, could you try disabling the auto timer (i.e. delete it, and then add it at another time) for a while, and monitor the results. See if that stop it from happening...
Maybe try disabling crossepg too for now and just use RyVIX.
EDIT: sorry, misread coolepg for crossepg.
I'm trying to get it to happen again at the moment, to see if I can see anything that's causing it.
And after 3hrs of testing I can't get it to glitch.
Typical isn't it!!

It flashed fine, I got the message fine.
Will try disabling auto timer later and see what happens.
I've had this too where a recording on playback would just freeze. I can then fast forward or rewind and it starts going again. I can even rewind to where it froze & start playing from that point and all will be well with it.
I don't have any autotimers set. It didn't do it yesterday but it was doing it quite a bit on Monday.
All,
This is the same problem I was having with PLi a while back.
http://www.vuplus-support.co.uk/showthread.php?2114-Recording-multiple-channels-on-PLi&highlight=
Pixelating, freezing etc on playback. But going back over problem bit again it played fine.
As on that thread an online update (downloaded 40 packages after 3-4 weeks) solved it.
There was no glitch for the 2 weeks since I updated and it also ruled out posibility of HDD issue.
Im now on VIX and havent seen that problem in the last 2 days.
On PLi forum there was a massive thread on it at the time so maybe they had a solution.
But as I say I havent seen it on VIX yet....

The problem also occurs in german VTi Team image 2.0 with OE 1.6.
Somebody found out that it doesn't occur anymore if you uninstall a plugin, e.g. CDinfo. Don't know if this helps.
Had the box hang this afternoon. At around 4:15pm
Was on Comedy Central then suddenly was presented with the ViX Radio spash screen (with man in rowing boat) and the Duo display showed "DVB Services" (also had no sound)
While still on that screen I ftp'd the /var/log/messages to my PC.
Then I simply presed the right cursor button on the remote and it went to the next channel (Comedy Central +1) and sprung back into life.
Last bit of log is

Can you try disabling Crossepg please and keep testing. Set everything in Crossepg to 'no'.

I disabled every EPG plugins. Now I recorded one program and watched it relive. First freeze occured after about 5 minutes. I will tell you later how often this happened. With OE 1.5 every recording was 100% correct. Hope this will be fixed soon :(
I also have the pic freezing on play back but I am on 1.0.
Cant get near TV at the moment due to wife and Hallmark. Will try it with it disabled tomorrow.
thanks
I've still got mine enabled at the moment, but have not had any problems tonight with any playbacks.
Watched a recording last night whilst it was still recording (basically, told it to start recording at 8pm, went to box at 8.30, and watched the recording all the way through. No glitching, no problems whatsoever...
Wife watched a recorded program last night, zero problems (epg not disabled at that point) so it seems intermittent. (Maybe we should all note down what time this happens if it happens again?)
Came down this morning to find my box hung as described in the above post 22.
Have now set all coolepg options to no and rebooted.
Just got the eggtimer appear for a second, followed by pixilation of the tv for a couple of secs (bbc1, live TV) have now removed the autotimer plugin.
Will let you know how things progress.
I've just had problems with the PTS Playback from USB.
So I've just removed the CDinfo pluggin to see if that makes any difference.
I might end up reflashing soon anyway, as I did have the error on the Original Install.
Since removing the CDInfo pluggin I've not see any issues so far %TouchWood% on either the USB PTS or the HDD Playback.
Hmmm.
Autotimer plugin removed.
CDInfo plugin removed.
Had no problems the last couple of days with playback freezing (but did get the box crashing on Live TV as described in my above posts).
Just did a software update.
Tried watching Harry and Paul, pic broke up then hung 2 mins into it. Stopped and restarted from beginning. Played past that point fine, about 5 mins later same thing happened.
Stopped restarted from that point and every 3 - 5 mins, it's breaking up and pausing, or simply just pausing.
Very very odd.

Am going to try reflashing.
If re flashing doesn't fix it, going to try another image just to make sure it isn't a h/w problem with my box.
Did you manualy remove the CDinfo pluggin? With the Force-removal option?
the only thing that can cause the box to APEAR to freeze is AutoTimer, it is set to check for new shows 5mins after a bootup and every 20mins there after, you can change the 20min to what you what to.
goto AutoTimer press Menu, go to setup, change the setting to what you want it is mins so if you want have only check once every day then change to 1440.

Did it via software manager/manage extensions .. and selecting Uninstall

Have already removed the Autotimer plugin prior to this recent freezing.
It froze permanently, wasn't just a pause while something updated, I left it on the frozen screen while I posted my last post, then made a cuppa, was around 15 mins and was still frozen.

something must be wrong, yeah try to re-flash :)
I'm hoping I've fixed it.
I THINK I've sussed out what was causing it, don't laugh :)
Re flashed and remote wouldn't work at all.
Tried again and still no response.
Then I had a look at the back of my machine, and the virgin media cable from my old box (which is still live as they let me keep my box in the bedroom for nothing as I have BB and phone) was touching the back of the VUduo, resting against one of the ports.
I moved the cable and made sure it can never flick back, re-flashed and this time the remote is working fine. So Hopefully that was all it was. Just transferring channel list now, so haven't had time to test yet.
For me its the picture breaking up, if you press 3 and 1 to rewind its fine from were it last glitched.
I have the autotimer to check every 200 minutes. You do not get the hour glass when it breaks up.

So far (it's only been 17hrs) since re flashing and moving my VM cable out of the way, I've had no problems.
However, the problem you describe is exactly the problem I was getting, so maybe the cable was a red herring. Will let you know if the problem comes back again.
I have uploaded the image file via DL and have just finished watching spooks and no glitches, mind you that was recorded on 1,0 and I got glitches on that as well, so either was image or gremlins as I have made no changes from when I installed it apart from the AT polling
Mine seems to have been sorted by removing the CDinfo plugin.
But I had to do a force remove as the normal un-install wouldn't remove it.
Just to say that since re-flashing and moving my old Virgin media cable, I've had zero problems (well the very next day the box rebooted it's self as per my other post, but I suspect that was a simple glitch after me messing around with all the epg downloads etc, been fine since).
Not had any freezing problems at all. Not had to remove any packages either.
Things are looking very very good.
Hey guys,
Can someone give the command to force remove the cdinfo plugin?
I have the same playback freezing issues with 1.1 and all the only updates. I am not using crossepg, just RIVIX, I am not using autotimer, no loose cables in the back :). Freezing are random too but from the 8 recordings I have done recently only 2 played back without freezing.
I have no other weird behaviour with the box.
Cheers
Please, I need the command to force remove the cdinfo plugin......
Regards from Spain
THANKS
From what I recall
It's
ipkg remove plugin name --force-depends
Please be aware the --force-depends can stop other pluggins working as well.
I Have forced removed the CD plugin but when watching and recording BBC HD last night I was still getting ribbons of pixlation on the screen
Havent checked the recording yet but not optimistic
Have decided to go back to DE image well what is now the BH image as cannot put up with this problem
