View Full Version : 3.8.3
From GB, a jump up from where we are now :)
Hello Gigablue community!
! It's time!
UPDATE!! 21.05.2013 21:20
Kernel update will come for the GigaBlue quad.
It is updated to kernel 3.8.3.
Can someone clear something up for me? Is the lack of gigabit LAN in the image due to:
a) no support in Broadcom SDK yet. Will come eventually.
b) kernels below 3.5 do not support something necessary
c) the BCM core requires a support chip to operate. The Vu+ solution was not just a temporary fix.
Think I've answered myself - the BCM7356 spec says it is MII compliant (fast ethernet) not GMII compliant (gigabit ethernet) so it was never going to be gigabit

Well, as you might now, the VU+ Solo2 has the same chipset but really does support Gb-lan.
The Vu+ solo2 has an additional GMII capable chip (RTL8211EG) on the motherboard.

Whatever way they fix it: GB also has (had??) Gb-LAN in their specs of the Quad.
The box my Quad came in had "10/100 Mb/s Ethernet" on the side

Possibly, but I refer to the specs the manufacturer has (had??) on it's site.

The manual supplied with mine says it does 10/100/1000 Mbit (in other words GIGABIT) It quotes it at least 3 or 4 times in the book.
The homepage too says it does gigabit.

As for the new kernel ;)
next year? :)
In a few days
This was posted on their forum,
Treiber und Kernel verschiebt sich leider, da es unerwartete Probleme an der Anpassung gab.
Aber nichts besorgnisserregendes. Sollte in den nächsten Tagen dann kommen
Which says (so Google claims :D )
Drivers and kernel shifts Unfortunately, there were unexpected problems in adapting.
But nothing alarming. Should come in the next few days

You see: still Gb-LAN in the specs of the manufacturer.....

Bit of a joke really!!!!!! to still advertise it as having GBLAN on their own website
what happened to these dongles some people were able to get? usb2 dongles, granted its only 480mbits but it sure beats wifi-n and 100mbits lan.
did anything ever surface from that?

They said 6-7 weeks (that was 6-7 weeks ago :p )

I'll send another email and see ;) you could do worse and bug them too :D
I sent my email to sales@gigabluebox.de but the reply came from onur@impex-sat.de (official German distributor)
ah
so we're expecting a new kernel in a few days (end of may)
usb dongles (end of may)
pluggable dvb-s2 tuners (end of may)
somehow i cant see any of this happening hehe
no worries though i'll fire off an email to them now :)
emailed them and got a reply already!
Hi,
the gigabit adapter will be ready to give for free in nearly 3-4 weeks.
Also the plug and play DVBS2 is finished development, the sales will start in 4 weeks, at Anga Show we wil lhave already samples there.
With Best Regards
USB mediate GB LAN will run at max of 250 mbit/s as only USB 2.0 so not worth much really
Hi,
the real (German) official web page only says 100MBit. They changed from 100/1000 to 100/100:-)
A guy in Germany attached an USB-GigaBit-adapter to his Quad and achieved a bit over 20Mbyte/sec. It is not much if you only copy a few short files but instead of 2hours copying it would be 1hour.
ciao
You can shift ~35 gb an hour at fast Ethernet (100 mbit) speed. Gigabit is more useful in burst capacity for BD image playback etc
so even the full usb2.0 bandwidth is not used with a usb lan adapter?

Not much of an improvement and far from GBLAN too :(
This is what I'm getting right now (using lan speed test lite)
26185
11391469 bytes
(informal notation: kilobyte = 1024 bytes)
bits 91131752
bytes 11391469
kilobits 88995.8515625
kilobytes 11124.4814453125
megabits 86.9100112915039
megabytes 10.863751411438
gigabits 0.0848730579018593
gigabytes 0.0106091322377324
terabytes 1.03604807009106e-05
petabytes 1.0117656934483e-08
so even the full usb2.0 bandwidth is not used with a usb lan adapter?
Maybe it would improve with the new kernel+drivers?
I must admit if it is barely double fast Ethernet I wonder if its worth it? giving the fact that a USB device must use some other resources too?
Still, if its free I'll take one :p
ye if its free why not :)
see what happens again when this new kernel and drivers appear.
they should just put the dvb-s2 tuner on sale already, i dont think that many people are interested to see a pluggable tuner at anga. unless thats really big news for gigablue, guess they'll just have a stand with a pluggable tuner on it. :)
Transport layer overheads take up a lot of bandwidth

You can get one for £10 on ebay
25mBytes/s is the max you'll be able to manage and I doubt you'll get it.

Vu will debut Duo2 and so it won't matter what's on Gigablue stand :)

true, there'll be overheads just like any protocol, but it doenst take up half of the bandwidth for it.

Quote from an old NEC article: "Specified speed of USB 2.0 is 480 mbps (in other words, around 60 Million Bytes per second, or 57.2 MB/s), but 57.2 MB/s is NOT the actual data rate. This is because USB 2.0 packet is inclusive of overhead data. [Note that conversion from megabits to MegaBytes requires (x*1,000,000/8)/1,048,576.]
Moreover, idle time are added between packets. Besides, data rate is also dependent on the system architecture, the PCI bus and the attached USB devices. Therefore, actual data transfer rate [of USB 2.0 High-speed] will be lower than 480 mbps (57.2 MB/s). Our measurement result of data transfer rate with USB 2.0 storage device (HDD) is about 20 - 25 MB/s on average."

I've just read the German site and there seem to be two chipsets recognized; LAN7500 and ASIX 505932 . A guy who had a device using the LAN7500 chip claimed 33 MBytes/s (write) and 29.5 MBytes/s throughput which is pretty impressive. However, someone else said they only got 15-18 MBytes/s.
I'm tempted to pick up a LAN7500 adapter and try myself.
Read about the chipset here (http://www.smsc.com/Products/Ethernet_and_Embedded_Networking/USB_to_Ethernet_Controllers/Standalone_USB_to_Ethernet_Controllers/LAN7500/Download)(and get the drivers!)
Ordered a Digitus usb2 adapter for Saturday delivery. £16.70
33 Mbytes/s == 120 Gb/hour

Sounds about right, I get between 25 and 30 MB/s on the various external HHD's I have.

It will be interesting to see what results you get, I wonder what chipset will be in the GigaBlue dongle?
15MB/s is crap!!!!!! I'm getting 11 to 12 with boggo fast Ethernet.
The first question will be does the ViX image include the driver for LAN7500, apparently the OpenMIPS one does.
If it works I'll test:
1. Laptop (450mbps wifi link) to gigabit router to gigabit usb 'dongle' to internal HDD
2. Laptop (Cat 6 cable / gigabit port) to gigabit router to gigabit usb 'dongle' to internal HDD
It's arrived, I've plugged it in, it's getting very hot ... but I can't seem to do anything with it.
I've installed OpenMips 2.0 but still no joy so I've asked for help on the German Gigablue support forum. There is a suggestion that the drivers required only worked on kernal 3.5.1
maybe install an older vix quad image with kernel 3.5.1 to test
Ok - working now. I had to download the kernel package kernel-module-smsc75xx_3.3.6-r0.0_gbquad.ipk from
http://feeds.hdfreaks.cc/V2.1/gbquad/gbquad/
and install - it can be installed in either vix or om2. This then provided a second network interface to select in the standard menu. Turned off the internal one, turned on the 'new' one and all working
using filezilla ftp:
450 mbps connection from laptop to router-> usb adapter gave me 120 mbps read and 85 mbps write
ethernet cable gave me a constant 255 mbps (29.7 mB/s) read and a very variable write (150-200 mbps) averaging ~ 19mB/s
CPU utilization was 30% for FTP process
using samba and windows file manger the rates were 20% lower @ 205 mbps read and 135 mbps write
NB: The USB dongle gets VERY hot

As for the new kernel ;)
In a few days
Hmmm still no sign nearly three weeks on. Not that I'm particularly bothered as everything seems fine on the 3.3.6 kernel. Unless I am missing something?
The only thing I'd like it to get is a UDF 2.5 driver so I can try playing back my BD ISOs. A 1.3 GHz dual core processor should have sufficient 'welly' to do this.

Now if you could pass through HD sound for BD's you would be getting somewhere :)

I have two boxes under my screen; the Gigablue ( dual 1.3 GHz MIPS) and an eGreat R150s (single 750 MHz RTL1186). The latter can read and display 3D ISOs with 7.1 DTS-HD sound, the former should have the raw muscle to get close surely? Both have hardware VC1 decoding
the quad will play remuxed blurays no problem, i just wish for hd audio passthrough, but i doubt we'd see that.
i doubt the iso's would play.
the quad does not have vc1 encoding. my batman bluray remuxes will not play.
ive been looking at those medi8er players from the sponsor, and i may even downgrade from the quad
Reading between the lines it seems they have driver issues with 3.8.3 for the new S2 tuners that are being released but they have working drivers for 3.3.6 (hence the new 3.3.6 drivers not so long ago)
eek :/ £40 for the dvb-s2 tuner from wos
i ordered one anyway heh

Apparently you are correct in that assumption. 3.8.3 still has "a few small problems"

I ordered two, I was hoping they would be the same price as the VU+ tuners (£30) but ho hum
ye i can only fit one more tuner in mine so 1 it is!

6 quads and one octo - seven sats in total (28-23.5-19-13-9-5-1w). No motor noise, instant switching.
Looks like shit tho!
There's a thread on the support forum that shows the beta 3.8.3 drivers are under test and (yay) the enigma2 cpu load is 1% at rest.
