Is there any way to make the left column of channel names bigger, so you can actually read them?

You mean to say ends of the graphics are chopped off?

If you can switch off overscan on your TV do that. If you cannot do this, you can adjust the OSD size. I have presumed you are on Vix image.
Menu > Setup > System > User Interface > Position setup

Adjust width/height and move right/down as required. Adjust so that you just see light round the edges.
