View Full Version : Wireless adaptor for HD51
Has anyone got a USB wireless adaptor working on their HD51.
I have a TP link adaptor that is working on my xtrend but cannot get it to work on the Hd51.
In the network setup it is showing but its named rt8lxxxu. I presume its a driver issue.
You need to talk with fat-tony or birdman who have been working this for another adapter and found a solution

Which will mean logging in and installing kernel-module-rtl82192cu.
Or you can do it via OpenWebIF (at least in 4.2.021).
Thanks Birdman.
rtl8192cu is installed already. Still not working correctly.
Just can't get it to see any wireless networks.
Thanks Birdman.

Thanks birdman.
How do I check if its installed and if not how do I go about installing it.

Open OpenWebIF on the box in a browser.
Click on Settings (under Extras) and then Packages.
Click on All.
Click on K
Look for kernel-module-rtl8192cu. If it is bold it is installed. If it isn't then click on it to install it (you'll get a pop-up to confirm that this is what you want).
If you installed it, reboot the box.
I have done what you have instructed. Clicked to install and the message pop up comes on the screen. I press Ok to install and then nothing appears to happen.

I would use a cheap set of home plugs from asda or tesco just plug and play and hassle free

Have you rebooted the box?
I have rebooted the box and went back to openwebif and its still showing not installed(not in bold)

Telnet/ssh into the box and type:
ls -l /sys/class/net/wlan0/device/driver
and check what it points to. If it ends with rtl8xxxu.. rather than rtl8192cu... then type:
opkg install kernel-module-rtl8192cu
Reboot the box.
Login again and type:
ls -l /sys/class/net/wlan0/device/driver
and check what it points to.
Hi If home plugs are an issue , I have used a 5 in 1 router as an access point connecting by wifi my home router and by cable to my HD51 , had no problems at all
the router I used less than £15 https://www.scan.co.uk/products/edimax-br-6428ns-v4-n300-wi-fi-bridge-router-5-in-1-300mbps-access-point-range-extender-wisp-2x-high
Or like this one,

or the new type 300 mb

Thanks birdman
Will give it a go once the grandkids have gone back home.
@Ashley69 - what @birdman posted in #13 should work. Let us know, please. I'm assuming that you have some means of connecting it to ethernet so you can telnet or ssh to it.
I have a similar issue in that I have an rtl8192cu dongle, but it's not being handled correctly. The solution was to install the rtl8192cu kernel module. I'm working on trying to get it included in the standard HD51 build.
Cheers Tony.
Will let you know later. Yes I have it on ethernet at the moment.
Thanks birdman and Tony.
This is what I get now I've installed the new kernel.
root@mutant51:~# ls -l /sys/class/net/wlan0/device/driver
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Jan 1 1970 /sys/class/net/wlan0/device/driver -> ../../../../../../../bus/usb/drivers/rtl8192cu
Wireless adaptor now working perfectly.
That's good news Ashley - this will survive any updates you may do. However, if you fresh flash, you will have to re-install the kernel device driver again. That is, until it is included in the standard build.
