View Full Version : What are the point of these over priced Tablet PC's?
What on earth are the point of these new generation tablet pc's like the iPad and and the Android range of tabled pc's?
Look at this one £480! Surely your better off buying a laptop

could not agree more my self. all i see when i look at a ipad is a way over grown ipod touch.
It's the touch interface and the Apps that set them apart from a laptop.
You can also get them fitted with data Sims (like the iPad 3G) for mobile internet.
Because the keyboard is missing, they are easier to handle whilst sitting down.
The battery life is also way way longer than most laptops.
Finally, they don't get hot (melting you legs!) like a laptop...

The app's never going to be as good as pc programs though are they?
They will one day but at this moment in time id still prefer a laptop anyday.
I would have agreed with you and though would never use mobile internet and apps but now would be lost without my HTC.
I'd quite fancy a tablet, there lighter than a laptop, you can use your fingers rather than a mousepad and light enough to take anywhere - even the kazee.
As Phoenix says, I just think they're over-sized over-priced Iphones / Android phones.

It depends on how you define "as good".
If you are talking about complex and powerful, then no. (at the moment)
However, the Apps can be very clever and very useful.
I used to think iPads where a solution looking for a problem. Not anymore!
I have a Sonos App that controls my all house music system, which is actually better than the dedicated remote pad that came with the system.
I have plenty of interactive Apps for the kids that are just brilliant. They just wouldn't have been made for a PC, but the App store allows developers instant access to customers.
Also, most Apps are free or 59p!
Even the most developed Apps are normally only £2.99. There are some satnav type Apps that are much more expensive, but that seem due to the map data etc.
It is slowly changing the way i do things.
I now browse the forums on the iPad whilst slumped in front of the TV..
I then fire up the SKY News App to catch up on current affairs.
SKY sports news App then gets a look in.
I then check my ebay account, before firing up the Weather App.
I was repairing my fridge to day. I had the iPad next to me showing step by step instructions.
I even had a u-Tube video running, showing the repair!
My wife has lots of cooking/life style Apps. But she mainly plays Solotaire.
She is slowly adding all the high street shops Apps. The Argos App is getting a battering.
When they say there is an App for everything/everybody, they are not far wrong!
So not a laptop replacement, rather an addition that does other things.
Fulabeer just hit the nail on the head, me and mrs exactly like that too, its a fantastic addition but wouldnt replace the laptop as yet, couple more years though hu knows, could quite well replace it
Personally tho, I'd much rather just do little things like all those using my phone... Why go out and spend and extra £400 odd to do it?!
Sent from my HTC Desire Z

exactly, dont get me wrong i use my htc desire for all kinds of things pretty much as fulabeer said above but to spend a extra £400 just for a tablet to do the same as i can on my phone is totally pointless in my opinion.
In this case size is important!
Or I should say screen size is important.
I have a iPhone 4, and there is no contest which is the easier thing to use/type on.
Watching a film, or reading a book is just so much better.
The touch screen comes into it own with the extra inches.
I feel like the phone is just a cute toy now.
I think you have to use one for a couple of weeks to "get it".
Typing on a touch screen is crap anyway :p Hence why I have a desire z... It;s not the best keyboard (so far, that has to go to the Touch Pro 2), but any physical keyboard is much better than a on screen keyboard...
As for the watching a film, I'd prefer to do that on the tv. Read a book ... you got it, a proper book is much better imo :p This just adds to the census that I'm getting old probably :p
personally i would rather actually crack open a real book than read one on a tablet or any other e-reader. i like the feel and smell of a new book and a digital screen will never compare to that experience.
Yeh, you must be getting old!
I agree a real book is better, but I can get any book at any time, night or day and can carry them with me anywhere.
Sex is better in the flesh, but that doesn't stop people buying porn!
It's about convenience and accessibility etc.
My laptop is brilliant, but the battery only lasts a couple of hours and it is awkward and heavy.
I don't like lugging it about, so don't!
The iPad is light and just the right size. The battery last about ten hours and the standby time is in months.
The thing wakes up from standby instantly, so it means I'm more likely to use it.
I just cannot be bothered to fire up the laptop, and wait whilst Windows does it's three minute boot routine, just to check the lottery numbers!
As I said, it's not better, just different from a laptop.
Fulabeer, ur wasting your time with those old timers.
Give them their pipe and slippers and send them off to bed with a glass of hot milk.
Lol
lol old timers eh ?. i aint quite ready for me bus pass just yet.
as for pipe ! well the only smoking pipes i'm interested in come attached to a shotgun.
Lol,
I must admit that I'm addicted to my iPhone.
I don't use my main computer that much anymore because I use my laptop and iPhone all the time.
I spent 7k on main computer a year ago and hardly use it now.
I know, I know I need a good kick in the arse.
Wish I hadn't bought it now
Forgot to say I also think the iPad is a waste of money.
I'm one to talk. Lol
I'm not trying to convince or convert them, just answering the OPs question.
People wondered why anybody would want to pause live TV, or even rewind it.
Now it is an every day feature that is brilliant if the phones rings or you mishear something.
Same with digital music servers. People say they prefer vinyl or CDs, but having it all stored on server/NAS means you are more likely to visit your entire collection.
My mate has an enormous vinyl/CD collection, but struggles to find the exact platter/disc he wants. He has organized them, but finding certain tracks quickly just doesn't happen.
A lot of his music time is taken up sorting through the library.
He has transferred it all to a Sonos type system, and has gained control once more.
He still prefers to actually get the original platter/disc out now and again. But for every day use, he is listening to more music.
Tablets are just more accessible and convenient.
well i have a 8TB music server my self, as for my old vinyl most of that was used as clay pigeons last year LOL.
