Hi folks, firstly i'm new here and would like to say what a great forum this is.

I have a couple of Vu duo's,flashed with the latest VIX image and updated. One is working great , the other I just got for a friend and whatever I do I cannot ftp to the /etc folder - the ftp locks up when i do so (when I browse to that specific folder)

I can browse most other folders no problem. It definitely only does it on this one box, the other is fine - have tried two different laptops and filezilla and flashfxp - both have the same issue.

I've tried relashing the box and its exactly the same.

Baffled ! Any suggestions welcome

Thanks in advance :-)

Try connecting with telnet, login as root, then run

Code:
ls -ld /etc

It should look like this:

Code:
root@bm750:/# ls -ld /etc
drwxr-xr-x 32 root root 0 Nov 14 00:19 /etc

If that looks ok, try this

Code:
cd /etc
ls -l

thanks - can i use putty to do this? I use it at work for something similar

Yes, putty is good. You can connect with telnet or ssh using putty - either is ok for running the commands above.

sorry whats the default login password ? tried user root and blank password but access denied.

VIX does not have a password at first install.
Also try filezilla never had a problem.

still no joy. logging in with no user = root password = blank via filezilla works fine, only it doesnt work in putty. we have this problem on kit at work, until we change the password with the passwd commanid. something to do with a null password not being blank?

can you do a screen dump of putty. When it says et5x00 login: root

If its saying root@et5x00:~#
your logged in.

you have the telnet radio button selected in putty and port 23?

LOL its the most obvious that often get over looked in the confusion.

Great your sorted.

in the event of default image ( VIX ) via telnet, I do this

user = ROOT
password = passwd ( not password )

you will then be prompted to change the password, type in your new password example "eric1234" (no text will show)
hit return, and repeat the new password, hit return, then a message will show that the password has been changed

you will then be able to use any ftp prog you wish

right im trying to access the affected box . when i type
root@vuduo:~# ls -ld /etc
drwxr-xr-x 34 root root 0 Nov 19 16:12 /etc
root@vuduo:~# cd /etc

its ok now when i enter this it hangs?
root@vuduo:/etc# ls -l

any ideas ?

i need transfer a file to etc and i cant :-(

this happens with putty, winscp, filezilla , flashfxp , 2 diff laptops, so its defo the box
