Because yamp and MediaPlayer2 did not work on newest openvix I made with Claude a MediaPlayer3 for playing local music, internetradio and podcasts. You can find plugin and screenshots at https://github.com/onni-k/mediaplayer3

Install: copy.ipk from https://github.com/onni-k/mediaplayer3/releases
to set top box /tmp or/ var/tmp and install selecting menu -setup -vix - install local plugin.

Uninstall menu -plugins - red - extensions - MediaPlayer3

Mainly developed to openvix but works on openatv, openpli and openbh.

Please try and give feedback.

If you want to help programming you can download program from https://downgit.github.io/#/home?url=https://github.com/onni-k/mediaplayer3

Especially new ideas and better skin would be nice.

Now there is bitbake receipt https://github.com/onni-k/mediaplayer3/blob/main/mediaplayer3.bb

How to use this:

Place this mediaplayer3.bb file in your BitBake layer's recipes- directory
Run BitBake to build the .ipk package:
bash

bitbake mediaplayer3

The resulting .ipk package will be ready for installation on Enigma2 receivers

If you use this and you want to search podcasts you must add your own api key from https://api.podcastindex.org/
And if you like use Finland Yle radio EPG you need api key from https://developer.yle.fi/en/index.html
Add the keys to settings. All other parts works without keys.

You need to sort out language selection so it works like every enigma2 plugin. You shouldn't have language selection in the plugin config. Changing language happens automatically when changing language in enigma.

isn't it nice to see what claude can do. today it can build plugins, in a couple of years it will build e3 ;-)

It needs a lot of supervision. Seems to like re-inventing the wheel rather than inheriting.

When someone says: "I coded this with Claude" , it is very broad. Here is what is at least partly available for the Public in Claude for August, 2026:
Claude Code:
Fable 5
Opus 5
Sonnet 5
Haiku 4.5

Claude chat:
Fable 5
Opus 5
Sonnet 5
Haiku 4.5
Opus 4.8
Opus 4.7
Opus 4.6
Opus 3
Sonnet 4.6

Enigma2 in general is not that complicated when compared to some other Yocto builds, or something like creating a nuclear bomb. Claude Code Sonnet 5 works well for most enigma2 edits, but the cost can eat you if you are not careful. Claude Fable 5 or Opus 5 are a lot more capable and provide more advanced coding, but also at 5 times the current price of Sonnet 5.

In 2025, Claude needed a lot more supervision and guidance as compared to today. Now it is pretty much automated, to the point where you can give Claude Sonnet 5 some tasks and simply watch them complete. However, there are times when the AI will simply stop and start asking question(s) about directions, and this is where a seasoned developer's expertise really helps.

It would be interesting and would help to know which Claude actually edited or wrote the MediaPlayer3 plugin. Claude chat Opus 5 is great at designing enigma2 menus or displays screens. Knowing what task(s) to give a particular AI model, and knowing the limits and expertise of the AI models helps. If I have time, I will try to tackle the MediaPlayer3 menu screen and let Claude Chat Opus 5 design something for it.

The 2027 AI's can be expected to be more capable and more intelligent than what we have now. As for re-writing enigma2 using AI technology, it could be done now for a high price. A human with great insight into enigma2 would be invaluable as supervisor of a rewrite project. Then you would need a team of AI's to edit and sort things, with a total monetary cost probably in the thousands of U.S. Dollars.

Things will get easier, and you will probably see more AI development and plugins in enigma2. But just because AI made it does not mean it is good or bad. You can expect to see enigma2 projects started and never completed or abandoned, along with enigma2 projects that expand beyond the scope of what they were designed to do, resulting in something too complex or too complicated. It is nice though to at least see effort like the MediaPlayer3 plugin.

Now i am back, was a little other jobs to do. This was coded with Sonnet5, but first i made documents with chatgpt, so i can give Glaude exact job and avoid daily timelimits. I don't know much of programming but i can test with several systems and document everything what needs to fix and then make buildplan with chatgpt.
I will add automatic language detection to next version. There comes also better skin support and couple skins like in attachment. It may takes few days. If someone have a vision what good skin may looks like that would help much.

Attached is a modified version of your repo that sets a selection of skins in a way that at least looks decent. Your plugin is very nice. I hope you continue improving it and then maintaining it. What is attached are suggestions that you can either use or discard.

Now there is new 1.0 beta2 version in address https://github.com/onni-k/mediaplayer3/releases/
This was big update. Whole skin system is rewritten to use background image based system. There is now only 2 skins, but it is easy make more. Dark skin is based on picture from El Bandido. There is also better podcast info screen for searching podcast. Automatic language detection will come to next version in few days.

So for me, the biggest problems at the moment:
  • Doing everything in a non-standard way, especially in the coding and way things work. As a long time enigma user I don't know intuitively how to use this plugin.
  • The help screen. Pressing help should open enigma's built-in help screen. Each screen should use HelpableActionMaps. The current system re-invents the wheel (and badly).
  • There is no button bar. And worse, the colour buttons are ignored and have no function whatsoever. And the rest of the buttons are not shown as active buttons on the button bar. The only way to try to figure out how it works is press help and try to work it out from a rambling text that does not explain anything well.
  • Help needs to be enigma's integrated screen (just button info about each individual screen), and any additional info needs to go in a different (info) screen.
  • Translation stuff is over complicated and doesn't follow enigma. Enigma typically uses a few lines in __init__.py.
  • *.mo files should not be in the repo. These are added by the bitbake recipe.
  • *.po files should not be shipped. They should be in "po" folder in the root of the repo.

Thank you for feedback. This is my first program what i have ever written, so there are many things probably wrong. I try add better standard help system to next version and also try chance program working more standard way. I first avoided color buttons but now there are all funktions i will add so now i can move some functions to color buttons and add buttonbar.

For for colour buttons use StaticText() and use the standard names, i.e. "key_red", "key_green", "key_yellow", "key_blue".

Other standard names: key_previous,key_left,key_help,key_info,key_menu,key_play,key_text,key_0,key_right,key_next

If you need help with anything just ask.
