compatible external hard drive?

please, can you suggest one external hard drive that can mount properly with solo, i bought two until now:

1- samsung 2.0 usb 100gb ( creating partition failed )

2- hitachi lifestudio 2.0 usb 500gb ( can't be mounted )

advise me please i want record on hdd and i want use timeshift, i use vix 1.1 image:rolleyes

I bought a 1TB Samsung F3 HD103SJ - + a USB external enclosure.
Which in total for both was under sixty quid.
