How to guide: Freeing up RAM/Memory on the Vu+ series receivers (Enigma 2)

'' Quick and simply guide showing how to free up memory on the Vu+ in case you need . Also work on other Enigma 2 based Linux satellite receivers (DM800HD etc...).

VU+ HD opensource linux enigma 2 based satellite receiver

Freeing up RAM/Memory on the Vu+ series receivers (Enigma 2)

(1) In Telnet type this command :

free

* You will see how much is total and how much is being used in that moment.

(2) Then type this command :

echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

(3) Lastly type the first command again :

free

agreed, Linux handles memory differently to windows so using the above is of no practical benefit to the end-user.

Oh i thought when there isn't sufficient ram memory this can cause the reciever to crash so this guide would be beneficial for this problem!?

in normal day to day use its not needed but where a receiver is suffering from memory leak problems it can briefly help to routinely free up portions of memory.

oh ok thanks i misunderstood the concept of this guide....thanks

Free RAM = RAM not used = RAM spoiled (if you don't use it, you'd be cheaper of to buy less).
Available RAM = Free + Shared + Buffered (you see those values with the telnet command 'free').
Of course it is important to have enough available memory.

Hi phoenix,
if you have a leak this memory is not free or cached and this will not help either.

Ciao
