Hotfile is being targeted by Hollywood Studios as part of the ongoing crusade against online piracy.

The Motion Picture Association of America has filed a motion for a summary judgement against the online storage locker in a bid to see it go the way of Megaupload.

Hotfile insists that it complies with requests to remove copyrighted material, but if the court order is passed the service could face legal action without the need for a lengthy trial.

Disney, 20th Century Fox, Universal Studios, Columbia Pictures and Warner Bros have been named as the plaintiffs in the case. The studios claim Hotfile's business model is "indistinguishable" from that of Megaupload.

"Hotfile actively fosters the massive copyright infringement that fuels its business," reads the complaint. "More than 90% of the files downloaded from Hotfile are copyright infringing, and nearly every Hotfile user is engaged in copyright infringement."

Hotfile runs an affiliate programme, which offers users payments based on how many times their stored content has been downloaded. The filmmakers argue that this encourages users to store sought after illegal downloads.

The plaintiffs rejected the firm's claims that it removes infringing material, accusing it of failing to keep track of repeat offenders. However, a recent notice added to Hotfile's website states that it has implemented a new "more aggressive" policy towards terminating accounts.
