This guide shows how to USB flash the new multi-boot recovery menu and new image flashing precedure for Amiko Viper 4K, Gigablue UHD Trio 4K and Octagon SF8008.

Recovery menu only has to be flashed once or if a new version is released, this DOES NOT have to be flashed everytime you want to flash an image. This is a basic overview how to flash the new Recovery multi-boot menu and a new image to slot one only.

If you've already flashed the new recovery multi-boot menu or you've purchased a receiver and the new recovery menu is already installed, you can jump to 'Step 10 below'. Step 10 onwards explains how to flash the image.

If you want to take a settings backup please do so, you can then re-store settings & plugins after you've re-flash. If you need help with this please create a new Forum thread.

You will need a USB stick formatted FAT32. I've personally test a number of sticks from 2GB to 64GB. Some sticks can be problematic and fail to be recognised correctly. If you face an issue with the USB stick not being recognised, try formatting FAT32 with 'Mini Tool Partition Wizard' Free edition. Download via link below:
Code:
https://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html

1) Download recovery_emmc.zip for your model receiver from www.openvix.co.uk.
2) Extract the zip file.
3) In the extracted file you will see the following files:
  • apploader.bin
  • bootargs.bin
  • fastboot.bin
  • imageversion
  • usb_update.bin
4) Copy the above 5 files directly to root of your USB stick.
5) Ensure your receiver is powered off and connect USB stick to USB port on your receiver.
6) Amiko Viper 4K & Gigablue UHD Trio 4K hold down REAR reset button and power on while hold this down. Octagon SF8008 hold down front Stanby button and power on whilst holding this down. Once UPDT appears on front screen release reset button or power button, whichever applies to your receiver.
Once booted into the new recovery menu you will see the screen below. ENSURE YOUR USB STICK IS FULLY MOUNTED, SEE TOP RIGHT CORNER FOR USB STICK USED IN THIS EXAMPLE. IF YOU DO NOT SEE /mnt/HDD0 XXXX free DO NOT PROCEED, YOUR USB STICK IS NOT FULLY DETECTED. TRY RE-FORTMATTING THE STICK USING 'MINI TOOL PARTITION WIZARD'. NOTE WINDOWS 10 FORMATING CAN HAVE ISSUES:

7) IMPORTANT, YOU MUST DO THE FOLLOWING THE FIRST TIME TO ENSURE RECOVERY MULTI-BOOT MENU IS FLASHED TO YOUR RECEIVER & CORRECT PARTITIONS INSTALLED. SELECT 'FLASH RECOVERY IMAGE' > PRESS OK AND ANSWER YES WHEN PROMPTED.

8) Once completed your receiver will boot into your previously flash image. If the receiver gets stuck on boot it just means you need to flash a new image. Either way NEW IMAGE HAS TO BE FLASHED.
9) Due to flash partion re-sizing you now need to flash a new image.
10) Power off, BUT ENSURE RECOVERY IMAGE FLASHING IS COMPLETED BEFORE POWERING OFF.
11) Download the image ZIP file for your receiver. Image zip file ends in simply 'mmc.zip'.
12) Copy the complete 'ZIP' file to root of USB stick, DO NOT UNZIP.
13) Amiko Viper 4K & Gigablue UHD Trio 4K hold down REAR reset button and power on while hold this down.

14) Select 'USB Multiboot Image Upgrade' > Press OK > You'll then see the following screen. At the top you will see the image zip file. In the field below you can select an eMMC slot to flash the image to. For this guide we are selecting Slot 1 where there is currently an OpenViX image installed. We will re-flash this slot. Select 'Start Upgrade' once ready and press OK.

15) Keep and eye for the Completed notice in screenshot below, appears for couple of seconds only. If miss it, simply press EXIT on your remote for the next step.

17) Select image in STARTUP_1 and press OK, your receiver will now reboot. Flashing process is completed.

@Sicilian

Thank you for the guide.

Would you mind explaining the process of restoring a backup image? For the life of me I cannot just simply restore a full image backup on the SF8008.

I have a fully working openvix image which I like. I back the full image up and copy the zip file to my computer. I then extract the zipfile to a usb stick but I cannot get the SF8008 to restore it.

In Image Manager just highlight the backup you want to restore and press the blue button to flash.

Flash the image from the backup folder directly. Don't use a USB stick.

Thanks, I've just worked out that you need to put the backed up image file into a folder on the usb stick called "imagebackups" and then you can see the backup in in order to restore it.

What about if the box is frozen or if it already has another image on it. How do you restore a backup? If I put the zip file "openvix-5.4-003-sf8008t-20210101_093204_mmc.zip" on a usb stick and enter the boot menu and choose USB Multiboot Image Upgrade it says there are no images available. If I choose Flash Recovery Image, it does look like it loads the backed up image but on reboot always gets stuck on the Hisilicon page.

Hi,

Following above instructions and have completed steps 1 to 10 above without any apparent issue. When I proceed to try flash the latest image I got as far as step 14 but when tying to install openvix-6.4.007.release-sf8008_mmc get 'No image found on the USB storage device"

The USB stick does appear to be fully mounted, any advice as to how I should proceed?

Cheers

why not flash from box instead off USB stick ?

Hi,

Turned out I was wasting my time! Had not flashed the box since I got it 5 years ago so I thought I should bring it up to date. After my issue described above I abandoned the update and restored from a backup. When the box restarted and I checked versions I was on the latest one, can only assume it automatically updates from the net.

so all's well that ends well.

Hope someone can assist. I purchased the SF8008 with Openvix latest 6.6 installed.

https://www.world-of-satellite.co.uk/octagon-sf8008-supreme-combo-dvb-s2x-dvb-c-t-t2?search=SF8008

During setup, if I select HDMI the blue screen comes up with a load of errors.

I then went into recovery mode and re-installed latest Openvix via online method thinking the original flash may have been corrupted, but the same thing happened.

I then flashed OpenATV instead via online method in recovery, and that seems to work fine and managed to set the box up without any issues.

Is this a faulty box or a is it a bug with the FW?

Then I downloaded an older Openvix 6.6 FW from the website and try to install via USB using the USB method above, but the USB does not show as mounted and a message comes up saying USB not installed.

I have tried with 4 different USB's and formatted all of them as fat32 using minitool, none of them show as mounted or recognised.

The USB's are not faulty as they are all recognised when I installed OpenATV. I am able to see them under storage and able to format.

Am I doing something wrong or is the box faulty as they are not recognised in recovery mode?

Thanks

I don't have a SF8008 providing you already have a recovery image can't you download vix image and flash online into a slot? Or if you have a full backup image and a storage device setup as media/hdd send the zip file to /media/hdd/imagebackups/

Edit I think OpenATV location is media/hdd/images

just use a usb stick and mount as HDD.Download image on to it and flash.Much easyer.

How do I mount as USB in recovery?

I have OpenATV installed as Openvix gives me errors as soon as I select HDMI.

How would I go about flashing if recovery is not detecting the USB?

I have followed the guide and saved an older Openvix zip file in the root of the USB

just flash new image instead of recovery just as you flash from usb or from HDD/stick. Just do not say that openatv has no possibility to flash an image because then it is time to install better :)

Do you have multiboot installed on that box ?

The box came with Openvix installed in 'slot 1' and something like 'Define OS 7.0' in 'slot 2'.

I flashed OpenATV in slot 1 over Openvix.

I prefer my Dinobot 4k+, so much easier to flash but needed one for a family member and could not get hold of one anywhere.

then just use usb stick as HDD and flash from there (couch flashing) in a free slot.Pay attention wich image you flash because there is a corrupt one on the road that gives message to buy original box.I do not now if openatv has the same as openvix to choose image to flash in wich slot

In openvix I go to image mmanager en choose downloads and there you can choose

just flash new image instead of recovery just as you flash from usb or from HDD/stick. ?

I will try that, only thing is in future if something goes wrong again I will need to online flash a different image (like OpenATV) first and then flash the image I want from there.

Is there a way to see why the USB does not mount in recovery? That would solve the problem.

no just flash image in other slot or in the same slot .No need to flash another image first.I have differant images in slot 3 and 4 and openvix in 1 and 2.
I always have an openvix with latest update and flash the new in other slot

Thanks, did you flash these images via recovery method or USB 'couch flash' from an existing image to a free slot?
