[VU+ Duo2] Transcoding with VIX Zeus

Just an update following on from the OpenVPN suggestion.

So after reading the excellent guide written by finbarr I decided to experiment with setting up a VPN server. However instead of setting it up on my receiver, I decided to use my router which has OpenVPN built in (Asus N66U running merlin FW). If your router supports custom firmware then you may want to give it a try using Tomato/Merlin firmware or something similar. The process is similar but since I'm more accustomed to working with Windows, it just felt easier. The steps are the same, just the commands differ slightly.

I setup the server and configured the client files and was able to successfully stream remotely from my phone running Android without any issues, all through Vu+ Player and connecting to my network using the OpenVPN app. Transcoding worked fine and I get the added benefit knowing everything is secure as opposed to the port forward/authentication route.

I'm glad I did it as it now means I can take advantage of the added benefits of having a VPN and I can access my network remotely but not just for streaming.

Although the guide is using Tomato firmware the steps and settings are the same with Merlins firmware if anyone is using that.

I have installed and configured OpenVPN using AirVPN. I have used the dynamic DNS service provided by Air and have forwarded the ports 80, 8001 and 8002 "down" the VPN to the solo 2.

Open VPN is working correctly.

I have an IPAD 3 running Blackbox to receive streaming/transcoding from the Solo2. The IPAD also has VLC installed for "local" transcoding.

From inside my network, I can load the Open Webif and can stream and also can transcode TV to my IPAD - all works perfectly.

The problem

If I try to transcode directly to VLC, using the format :- http://myairdnsdetails.airdns.org:1234/1:0:92:Af:d99:82:99b00000:0:0:0 then it transcodes the current channel perfectly.

However, I want to use the IPAD application called "blackbox", otherwise I have to manually type in the entire details above, and have no ability to change channels.

On "Blackbox" I have configured as follows :-

1. Transcoding is enabled
2. Type is "External Transcoding (VLC)
3. Transcoding settings are :-
Host - My airdns host
Transcoder Web-Interface Port - left as default (8080)
Set-top-box web-interface port - 16557 (which is forwarded down the VPN to port 80 on the solo2)
Everything else as default

I have tried changing the Transcoder Web-Interface Port from 8080 (default) to port 1234 and have also setup a forward rule down the VPN to take port 1234 and forward to port 8002 on the solo 2

Yet transcoding doesn't work through the app.

Any ideas?

I have given quite a lot of technical details here, and I feel I am really close to making this work. The thing that doesn't make sense is that a direct connection via VLC, using the VPN ports works!

I receive the message "Connection to the transcoder failed or transcoder invalid".

Are you saying you set up OpenVPN as a server, running in your Solo2?

If so, then you ONLY need to port forward that ONE port on the router to allow the VPN client(iPad) to connect.

Once it has connected, it is the same as if you are inside the local network. So browse the OpenWebIf interface using the Solo2 INTERNAL IP address. Read up on VPN a bit more to fully understand it...

works like a charm transcoding on openvix-Zeus.023-vusolo2 on PC and android with vu+ player
