yes i know im inviting people to immediately dismiss me
i am happy. Happy to pay. Happy to pay £40-£50. Hell, even a £100, for an Image that just Works, where updates automatically happen.

I installed the latest release of Vix 3.0.204, yesterday.
Last night, I was looking at the timers through webif on my laptop, shut the lid went to bed.

I come back today from work....the box is frozen on timers. Had to reboot.

Then none of the channels are tuning. So I have to restart Oscam (even though its set to start on startup).

Then after letting Oscam do its thing, channels are slow to tune, and most of them not even tuning at all. (Despite yesterday EVERYTHING working).

It just keeps saying 'tune failed' constantly now.

What has changed, from yesterday to today? I dont get it.

As I say. Im willing to pay money for software that works, that is updated, where someones available for technical support via teamviewer or something.

At the moment just viewing tv is proving a hassle in itself.

there is a newer version of vix build 350 which has ironed several faults since build 204 why don't you give that a try, first.

thats what most people will tell you to do.:)

yeh and of course these things are constantly updating and no doubt a newer version might help.
but fundamentals like just...viewing channels
the box not crashing randomly for no reason.

these things should always be working no matter what. im going back to 2.4.213 which at least seemed reliable.
its like when i first got the box in 2010 september, and started using vix images, things were running really great and smooth, and over time its progressively got worse!

yes i know the image is being provided for free and its peoples time, and its people probably dedicating a weekend to programming these things.....but thats why im happy to pay for these peoples time, to come up with a solid image that just works.

id happily pay for quarterly updates too for say £10 each major update or something.

I'm sure there are many many people like me, who want to use a linux box because of the obvious advantages (and i dont mean anything dodgy, i am a proper s*y subscriber, i mean the speed of the menus, the epg, etc..etc..)

but dont want to have to learn linux programming just to get the thing to function correctly and happy to pay for a really good image.

I'm not having a go but at the end of the day, we are nothing more than a group of amateur satellite enthusiasts, every thing we do is out of our own free time and totally free ( IE we dont get paid ). so that said try another image if you are unhappy with ViX or better still take a subscription out with sky and complain to them when things dont work as you want them to.

No one is ignoring you but your proposition is unworkable AND not the way VIX works. We have never charged for the image nor will we and that applies to support we offer on the forum.

Perhaps rather than grying to buy support if you explained your issue in detail we may be able to resolve it bginning with crash logs and debug logs.

I have three boxes with two of them with a dozen autotimers and not had a freeze

youre right i will, i guess i was taking the wrong approach.
its just frustrating, when you just want to sit down and watch tv.

i think i'll give it a month and download another stable release whenever its ready and then make sure i log and detail all the problems.

Unless you are prepared for issues and learning more about linux than you might want, then you should always stay on a stable release

Wich box are you using? Why not use the original image, you paid for that one?

Latest VIX image is working 100% on my box, no crashes, no hangs, no missed recordings, no tuning failed, so it's either your box's fault or your sat dish perhaps moved?

I understand that it can be frustating, but don't go flaming VIX, for all you know it's not their fault.

Also always provide logs so that people can look at what is going wrong.

If it's only a question of money for you then you are in the wrong place.
Subscribe to an official provider like Sky.

a linux receiver will NEVER be perfect, no matter how good it is, its the nature of the beast. teams like vix put thousands of hours of work in to the images, for free, as a hobby

what you want IS actually available, stable firmware, instant technical support, you can even speak to a real person on the phone, your viewing will never be unexpectedly disconnected, and everything will work as close as youd like it to

by simply taking out a sly subscription, as like you said, youre willing to pay for the stability

linux based receivers are hobby boxes, but people are forgetting that. receivers like this is what companies like sly watch, to see what people like, who had the first PVR receivers, the first twin tuner receivers, the first PiP receivers, the first (very basic) EPG, reminders (auto zap), streaming, downloadable content, partnerbox type functions, sly etc have taken all of this FROM the linux based receiver community, and ploughed millions of quids into developing their own versions of it

you gets what you pays for, and if you want rock solid idiot proof stability, then pay £700+ PA for it to sly, but, be limited with what you can do with it

Hi

I totally understand why people moan about glitches in the image but they need to understand that the image is a development of hobbyist who just think the original image sucks and are trying to develop the ultimate hobbyist image all singing n all dancing only problem being we all have different ideas on that ...lol
The biggest problem really are people purchasing these receivers thinking they are like a s~y box and that its simply a switch and watch machine... ok some do come supplied by the dealers loaded but do all the people who purchase these receivers really understand the workings i dont think so, you only have to read our forums to see people stuck on simple problems not having a clue on the way forward.
In the end alot of us here offer help to get other newbies up and running but its a two way thing we dont know what your doing and need clear information on what you did maybe with a crash log
