I hate the vi editor so have installed the nano editor. But to make it the default editor for such commands as "crontab -e" you can type in "export EDITOR=/usr/bin/nano".

This works great until you reboot the box, then you have to re-issue the command. Can some kind linux/vix guru please tell me how to make this change permanent?

thanks

Ok well install nano from the vix->packet manager (you have to scroll for years and years) and reboot box.

then in terminal log on as root and type:
cd /etc (hit enter key)
nano profile (hit enter key)

then in the editor replace the line
EDITOR="/bin/vi"
with
EDITOR="/usr/bin/nano"
ctrl + x to save
then hit Y to save (press enter key)

reboot box and nano becomes the default editor.

DISCLAIMER: do this at your own risk! don't come complaining to me if something goes wrong. It worked fine for me though.

cheers

instead of scrolling for years and years
try this in telnet

opkg update
opkg install nano
