Hi guys

posted in another thread a problem i have with movies i have on hdd, mrs likes to know what they are about before watching, what would be ideal is a link from my hdd to the imdb site for some reason i cannot find the search for imdb apart from whats on the satellite channel, im sure i came across a search engine for imdb.
The alternative would be project val as when set up it scans the hdd and list all your movie data however previous versions of PJ didnt work so well due to updates done by the PJ team, also noticed PJ no longer listed in the plugins.
So if any of you guys are still using PJ with the latest vix image can you let me know what version it is.

By the way andy B did you get in touch with the PJ team I hear they would like to work with you to develope PJ to work alongside vix images

regards

Yes, PV works on latest VIX releases perfectly.
It's when you play with/delete PV database settings that it can go wrong.
If you just want to index your TV shows & movies, the latest PV releases should work fine.

yes PV works fine with ViX and always has but if you use the update option from within PV it self that tends to lead to problems.

They to my knowledge have never formally approached us to offer any type of collaboration work. There more than welcome to approach us if thats what they want.

@pheonix since PV was removed from the feeds, a manual install of it works a lot better.
Still lots of issues but better. Let them deal with it...

which is why it was removed lol, it's for the PV team to ensure that PV is fully compatible with ViX not the other way around. and to be fair andy is way too busy to go chasing after other teams. as i said it works with ViX but yes there are still some issues that have to be resolved and thats up to their respective authors, if they wish to approach us we are willing to listen but we wont go running after them.

exactly... no point in Andy building broken builds. Let them deal with it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but this (your approach) does not seem the right one.
I, as a 'customer' of VIX - which is an image that 'empowers' the boxes we - customers - own, expect to see the image developers to fine-tune their image-endings to suit certain 'important plugins' like PV is. I say this because, the way I see it, PV is the best available Enigma 2 media center plugin. As such, they - the authours of PV - can not make sure to have their plugin work with every image there is, based on Enigma 2. I believe they work hard to make their FREE plugin on Enigma 2 STB, but I do not think they should make sure that their plugin works with all the Enigma 2 variations of images that are around.

To me this seems a little bit selfish and arrogant. Instead there should be more openness toward developers of such 'big' and elaborate plugins, like PV.
In the end of the day, VIX is now OPEN VIX, based on PLi open project...

Wow, "I, as a 'customer' of VIX"???
VIX has no customers, get a grip.

'customer' means user in this case.

PV or project valerie to give it it's full name is a external plugin. built, maintained and updated by it's own team of developers, as is the ViX image.

we like all other teams are a group of unpaid amateurs, It is therefore unreasonable to expect us or any image team to have to not only develop, maintain and update our own software "image" but to then have to sit down and fix every one elses work so that it will work with the image ? not even the mighty Microsoft would do that. As i said we are more than willing to work with the PV team if they approach us ( which they never have ) but you cant very well expect us to go out of our way to chase after them or any other plugin development team.

as for ViX being based on pli, yes thats correct we are loosly based on the pli source. put it this way we have 1 coder in the ViX image namely andy black he does almost all of the work on the image on his own, totally unpaid often into the very small hours. do you think it's fair to ask him to trawl the internet to fix every plugin he finds because some one might want to use it in the ViX image ?.

If Andy had to worry about every plugin, we would never have VIX 2.4.

OK, you asked for it: I will correct you.
Simply said: it's impossible to adapt a complicated image to a range of plugins. And after all: a plugin should be what the name says: plug-in.
Secondly: you may call this plugin to be important, others vote for other plugins. Personally I do like the idea of PV, but I never got it working the way I want it to. So after spending many hours, I stopped using it.
Thirdly: PV has been named like that for a good reason: it's a project. It changes on an almost daily bases. How could we possibly keep our image up-to-date with that?
Sorry to say so, but making statements like you did only reveals that you have no idea what goes on in image making. And there's no arrogance in this at all, it's just pragmatical.

If Andy had to worry about every plugin, we would never have VIX 2.4.
Exactly!

Hi mates

From what i read from PV team they need insight to how andy and the team tweek things with the Vix image to enable them to adapt the pv prog for our image, last thing i read was they have andy's details here and were gonna send him a message.
Thanks by the way for the heads up regarding pv working with the image i was aware that auto updates were useless as they would normally crash but like i mentioned only really need it to have a imdb data base of my movies for the mrs to glance at before she selects one

regards

No, I do not expect Andy (or any other programmer) chasing down plugin developers. But, I do not see why not making available the relevant bits of the vix source, to some plugin developers, so they can fine-tune their plugins.
Writing an email to a few other teams does not seem to be very time consuming. But saying that your open for any team to approach VIX first is the most you can do, it does not seem just pragmatical, IMO.
And yes, I understand that developing/updating images like VIX requires lots of man-hours.

Anyways, I do not want to turn this thread into a sterile debate (and somehow aggressive).

Sorry, but this is not a Black OR White discussion..............
I believe VIX team should have some statistics on the downloads of the plugins, which ones are the most downloaded plugins, hence the most interesting plugins for the vix users.
For these plugins, it might be a good idea to contact the respective teams - if this would be needed. But I believe that most of the plugins are kidn of standard E2 plugins, hence they would fit ok in the vix image.
On the other hand, I have seen a few plugins that were embedded in the latest vix builds, because it made sense to make them part of the vix image, bettering it, offering more features to the users.

Lastly, the removal of PV (build 1162 i think it was) from the plugins feeds was like shutting the door into the face of PV team.
But again, this is just my personal feeling, because personally I believe that SHARING would be the way to go in this case, and not the other way around.
After all, this is what we do here, in this forum, right?

What???
Taking it out of the feeds leaves you free to install whatever PV version you want.

Lastly, the removal of PV (build 1162 i think it was) from the plugins feeds was like shutting the door into the face of PV team.
By this statement you show clearly that you have no idea what you are talking about, in spite of the fact that this has been elaborated on our forum several times.
So for the final time, I'll try to explain things:
Once upon a time we build PV from their repos, made special adaptations to make it ViX-compatible and made PV available via our feeds. This however resulted in two major problems;
1- the update-function within PV could not be left out, as by than the plugin didn't work at all. The result was that people used that update function (in spite of our repeated warnings), which resulted in a bricked box. A reflash was the only option, and we were being blamed for this problem.
2- PV changed so often, that is was impossible to keep up with that.

So you see: we have done quite some work to get PV running, but this was not a sustainable situation. Neihter for us, nor for users.

Furthermore: show me one image where the image-makers spent so much time and effort on making many (much asked for) plugins compatible, or even embedded them in the image as ViX did. So don't come here to tell us we should do more.

And last but not least: as the name 'Open-ViX' already suggests, our complete repos is available to all interested parties. So any plugin builder has every opportunity to have a look in there, and to adapt his work to ViX if he wants to.

PV is a project, as the name reveals. It even is an open project: you can add your devotedness to their work and/or you can ask the team to adapt PV to ViX (or any other image for that matter).
But don't come here and tell us we have to do even more than we already do. And don't turn the world upside down by saying that an image should be a plugin for PV.

BTW: If you don't feel comfortable with the present situation, you're a lucky guy: there are plenty of images to choose from!
