And im stuck between the VU+ Duo and the VU+ solo2, basically what I want to do is have the box set with UK bouquets, so if I put in channel 401 then SS1 will come on, be able to record on one channel while watching another, and be able to rewind live TV. I know both are HD boxes also so that to me isn't an issue.

A local store is currently charging £255 for the duo, £297 for the solo2. Price isn't really the issue, if the solo2 is worth more than the £42 extra im happy to pay it.

Thanks in advance guys.

I think the Solo2 is worth much more then that!

I don't understand that a box that is euuuhhhhh, how to say that nicely..... euuuhhh 'a bit elderly' seems to be it :p is so expensive compared to a complete new developed box that is ten times as fast
And there are no real issues with the solo2, so for me it wouldn't be a question at all.

what size hd would you recommend? Would a 500gb be sufficient or would I run out of space quick and go for a 1tb?

Solo2 best receiver out there super fast.
A hard drive size is down to how much you record etc you will need to work that one out yourself.
I personally have a 128GB SSD and is plenty for my needs.

ouch! Just realized that the solo2 hdd needs to be sata III, best make do with a 120gb for now!!

SSD drives are wasted on satellite receivers. You can get 1TB 2.5 conventional drive for about £50.

It has sata 3 sata controller which can handle the faster drives. It will still run the slower drives.

Great stuff, so when I get this box, how do I transfer all the required software to it? cfg files, bouquets etc. Can I just ftp into like I do with my tm600, or do I need another tool like DBedit or something like?

Thanks for all the helpful info so far guys, much appreciated! :)

For transferring bouquets, you can use the same prgorams as you do now. Just change settings to E2. However, there are plugins to create the bouquets which will do the numbering you requested( OE alliance ABM (built into VIx images) as well as Lraizers AB 28.2) . You can transfer multisat bouquets and run the plugins.

Rest of interaction between PC/STB is the same barring no miniweb. You have to use ftp.

Exactly: no idea why so many people want to through away good money on this. And probably there is no good Linux-controller for SSD's. so they would wear out swift.

With 'conventional' you mean SATA 2?
Indeed, a SATA 2 HDD will do fine.

Basically no heat and no noise and faster response times and quick FTP transfers are why i use them.SSD are quite cheap now and no longer the preserve of the rich.should try it before you knock it.
you will get a good few years out of one in a solo2 with a good quality SSD it about 5-10 years now they say.

I never hear the HDD's in any of my boxes.
None of my boxes has a temperature problem.
On transfers the CPU and/or the NIC is the bottleneck, not the HDD.
SDD's are far more expensive (price per MB) and vulnerable (for wear).
Response times are no issue for STB use (large files).

is there any preference for HDD for solo2. I thought I had seen somewhere that some were too deep to fit?

Aim for a 9.5MM one mate and you should be fine.

Also check out forum sponsor before you buy and he is offering forum member discount as well.

I have a Momentus in my SOLO2 and it runs fine, never hear a peep out of it.

Bang for bucks conventional HDD better than SSD
