[VU+ Duo2] hades dead?

Hi,
I want do-not-use-3.2 as the name:-)

I really do not care how it is called as long as it is working and the boot image is nice.

ciao

And as a newcomer to Vix I have to say the "just watching television" stuff works very well too

Since the software isn't locked I can backup the settings - like the recording schedules - something no other proprietary box has ever let me do.
We can decide to watch some recorded telly in another room with no hoops to jump through, just a streaming box of our choice having done a bit of setup beforehand.

The Hinton household has, in the past, had many a desperate session of lets watch every recording we can before the (proprietary) box gets swapped out, followed by a mad scribble-down of the recording schedules because nothing gets backed up or transferred.

As part of the march of Mr Torvalds' penguins into into our household, OpenVIX has settled in nicely.

Really interesting thread.

Personally I am ever so grateful to the forum members for providing such a great platform/service that enables us all to enjoy our tv/radio habits, in fact I am going to place a new order with WOS for a second new VU+Solo2 wonder what software would be installed.

Kind regards and please keep up the excellent work I for one am very grateful to ALL
John

well, yes vix is a great dvr platform... i'm very happy with hades 018 on vu+ duo2. so happy that i will refrain from installing new versions for a while unless there are new must have killer features.
but as vix is a lousy mediaplayer, i have started to build one based on intel nuc and windows 10. hope it will be an interesting playground for a while. :p

but as vix is a lousy mediaplayer,
Sorry to say, but this has nothing to do with the image. The box's hardware comes with a limited codec support, that's all.
On the other hand: if you use correctly coded media-files, or recode them correctly (preferably using H264) you'll see that media playback is just fine.

Or if you want you can buy a specialised media player :)

rob, i don't want to bash... and i agree that e2 video playback would be good enough for me.
but simple things like picture slideshows from pictures stored on a nas are very basic. i just recently came across kodi, and i'm facinated by the picture slideshow features. i know that there is a e2 kodi plugin... but that just offers 720p resolution... and I don't want to restart the discussion about streaming and drm streams that we had in another thread.
as i said i love e2 and vix but it is severely limited to dvr.

yes, i looked into 2 specialised players: linux/codi and android based players. both have limitations. that's why i chose windows which offers me the flexibilty to run kodi, andoid apps (via emulator) and browser based drm streaming.

I would be in agreement with you 2stein - the media player aspects of E2 generally are limited and it's not just a codec issue. High bitrate audio files and multichannel audio files are not supported even though they might be using fairly standard flac pcm encodings. However, the thrust of development is in satellite and terrestrial DVB and the recording and timeshift of same. In that regard it's streets ahead of kodi for example. However kodi excels in the playback and indexing of media files. So I use both!

i agree with you completly... but my point is: vix dvb stuff is perfect (at least for my use cases)... so, vix could start to add kodi like features... instead of circling around dvb without visible impact/improvement for the user.

Yes, indeed; they're cheap enough nowadays.

And people tend to forget that we're talking about a DVB-receiver/DVR. Not sure why so many people seem to want all kinds of not related stuff embedded as well? Would they have the same wishes for their coffee machine

Joking aside: all player-functionality your STB has, is to be regarded as a plus. I guess your BR-player doesn't receive any satellite service :)

Agreed Enigma is complex enough, when you look at the dedicated media players with added features like media juke boxes and generation of media covers and information libraries its just too much added complexity..... The media player forums by themselves are packed with request for changes, fixes .. It goes on and on!

well, it's much more convenient to have just one box hooked up to the tv than having to power up a second box and switch hdmi-inputs.
and from a compute power perspective the e2 boxes are easily capable of handling those additional features.

But again: you're not asking your BR-player to have DVB-receiving options. Because that would be the same, and save you a box as well.
It's always only about the STB that should embed other machines, never the other way around.

Agreed: I would like to have the multi tuner DVR, media-player, BR-player and coffeemachine embedded in my new TV.
Although, on second thought; breaking a part of the functionality would require a whole new machine..... What a waste that would be......

BTW: if switching inputs is your biggest concern, think about a decent RC (see my footer).

i don't need a br-player... with all the streaming stuff... brs will go away anyway... :-)
all i'd like are some more kodi-like picture/streaming functionality embedded in e2 because my main use case is dvr... and it's just a waste to have an additional box sit around idle most of the time
i understand that people are stubborn... which i can't change...so, i've bought an intel nuc to build a nice media player... but adding an additional box is from a conceptual point of view a step in the wrong direction.
