I have noticed another problem since upgrading (already posted slow response on 4.2.001), when I stream I am asked for username and password even though HTTP encryption is disabled!! My box username & password do not work. I have gone back to v4.01.16 and the problem goes away! (ie VLC doesn't ask for UN & PW) What has changed in the new image software and how can I work round it?:confused:

To be honest and I say this as a daily user of the ultimo. I would personally stay on a older image.

The ultimo is getting on now and simply does not have the same performance as the newer boxes. My own ultimo was only just upgraded from Zeus a few weeks ago to one of the first of the 4.xx series images and it won't be going any further as I can already see signs of it struggling with that image.

Thanks Larry Does that not cause issues further down the line as the older image will not be supported? It would be good if we could obtain clarification on the suitability of the Ultimo for v4.2. It may be a mature box but I thought it had plenty of "humph" to handle existing demands. I wait for help from the more knowledgable members of the forum. Fingers crossed of course!!!

I have a vague memory of vlc not working for root with a password at any point (I probably tested it around a year ago), but did work for a non-root account if you set one up.

One thing I found after I stepped down from ViX was that always using the latest and greatest image was wayyyyy overrated. When I left the team I didn't bother to flash any of my receivers for well over 9 months and they never suffered for it.

As long as you backup all the plugins and drivers you need while the feeds are up and keep regular full image backups of your working system you should be fine. My brother got a Duo from me approx 2 years ago and its never been updated in all that time and it still works perfectly. I update ABM once in a blue moon and thats about it.

The Ultimo on the other hand was once a beast of a machine but its getting long in the tooth now just look at the specs sheet for it compared to other boxes here

It's had a hell of a good run considering it was officially discontinued from the manufacturer three years ago.

Dont get me wrong I am not knocking the Ultimo. My own is a true work horse, on from 04:00 to 23:00 every single day and never ever turned off except for standby which it self just kills the video and audio feeds. At some point your just going to have to accept that pilling more and more onto a aging system like this is just going to trip it up and cause no end of problems.

I use mine daily and I can clearly see its not the same machine when used with the newest images and I said as much to the team about a year ago but was basically told I was talking shite.

And dont get confused when you see
Flash (MiB) 1024
as you only actually have half that amount available as Vu+ never released the full amount of flash to the end user although they promised to do so. I think Andy once explained it to me when I was visiting his house as something to do with the chips they used.

Thanks Larry A breath of fresh air to hear an honest appraisal, no criticism implied of the establishment. I have image and settings backups as well as the original image download on my memory stick, I assume that is sufficient. Regards Frank

Thanks Birdman Not sure why I have a problem with V4.2.001 and not with the previous image version, strange, hence the reason I'm asking the question. Frank

I used to be one of those bleeding edge types who had to have the absolute latest image on all nine of my boxes, then after I stepped down from ViX I got involved in other things and E2 took a back seat. (on a different bus it was so far back in my list of priorities)

I can honestly say with a strait face that you simply do not need the latest and greatest image every time its released and the feeds being cut for a particular image should not force you to jump to the latest images either. If your receiver does every thing you want it to and you don't want to move image, don't. your not missing any thing and it's way less stressful too.

Hard to say that as a general statement; one would need to know what enhancements there are.
In the stone age one didn't miss iron knives; it was only after they became available that one really needs them :)

I'm having a similar problem. my problem is that when I enable http auth it doesn't work ie I enter my user and pass and it says error on my android app and it just keeps popping up to enter my details on the laptop when I press ok. everything works fine with no http auth but that's a security issue for me! will there be a fix on the next release?? please!!

Thanks for the helpful comments guys. The question that is stumping me is why my setup with 4.2.001 doesn't work but when I revert to 4.1.016 the same setup works. What has changed?:confused:

.... 4.2.001 doesn't (mustn't) involve a settings restore, so there must be something you've forgotten you did on 4.1, perhaps?

changing any of the other settings doesnt work. the only way i can get openwebif to work is by haveing no security at all. if i turn enable http auth to yes openwebif doesnt work but if i change it to no it works fine leaving my box wide open!!

You (also or instead of) enabled stream-authentication?

Well, I have used OpenVix in my Ultimo from Apollo on and I haven't noticed any problems in 4.2.001, which would relate to the lack of resources in the box. I must admit that 4.1.16 felt more stable than this but, hey, this is the first release.

yes of course it's the fact that the port I forwarded to the box on my router is the reason it's wide open. but I can't protect it with the user and pass option because it doesn't work. i'v tried it z few ways and the only way openwebif works is if there is no http auth.
