I don't use Timeshift so an interesting learning period! So this is my understanding of how it works and as a result the attachment.
Most of the code developed for Timeshift dates from 2013 and as such is basically same on most images like OpenATV and their clones (as they took the OpenViX code).
The major change during that time has been python 3 and Unicode, which expect all sources to use utf-8 (thanks to the American developers - who expect you to know all your sources and make sure its utf-8) - Unfortunately there are other coding variations and languages in this world. ... and Kodi and Windows doesn't help.

So running Timeshift uses the timeshift folder until you stop or decide to continue as a recording, at which point 2 files are created in the Movie folder (for the "Movie" recording and one for the timeshift part recording).
When you stop the recording, Timeshift will merge the 2 files creating one "Movie" file and delete the other.....so at this stage one Movie folder.
Works fine EXCEPT that when you stop and it goes to merge, it processes ALL files in the /media/HDD/Movie directory, looking for a Timeshift Movie/Timeshift pair...... which is indicated by a pointer in the Movie meta file.

So not an issue, except if that Movie folder contains files with non utf-8 file names - such as from Kodi.

The attachment, tries to handle that by looking at the most likely encodings (utf-8, latin-1) and if not, assume its not involved in Timeshift.

So try the attachment - works fine on my test box

Thanks, I'd like to look at the code and think about that. I can see that matches would not happen if character differences exist but I'd like to look at the logic and not speaking python I'll need some time :)

What do you think is the cause of the phantom file? The file name thrown up in the crash files is an old (29 Jan 2024) filename which does not seem to exist on my box. Understandably an error is thrown because the file doesn't exist - not even with a similar name. However that name appears in the debug files from your tracer version of timeshift.py, in the list of filenames in the trace! How is that possible? where is it coming from? Are there hidden files I can't see in my HDD with Filezilla?

I'm also wondering what else happens with KODI. I don't normally record via KODI (I think I tried once and it didn't work. never did it again). However if KODI uses the web interface to play TV video, and timeshift is enabled in the settings....? I expect you get my drift. :)

Thanks for the new .py version - I'll install and advise the results...

I Installed the new Timeshift.py and ran a brief "timeshift Stop after current event" No reboot this time! 2 debug files (one is yesterday's updated today). Larger file was saved today at 14:49, other is still being continuously updated but no recording is going on...??
Just noted too that one of the save times are 1 hour ahead of local time - not sure that was the case before! I've attached a screenshot showing times. Recording was started at 14:28 UK local time. Very odd time numbers...

looks OK, if you mean debug logs ...... 1st debug log started Yesterday (9th) and finishes today at 13.49, 2nd debug log starts today at 13.55 and finishes at 14.46 ish
Yes, unless in deep standby you get activity usually.

Ok thanks. So if you are happy with this, I'm happy! Do I keep the latest .py version, disable debug logs and consider the timeshift crashing resolved?

If so I'll keep an eye open for the other type of crashes - maybe the two are related and both are fixed....

Probably send an updated attachment as there is a debug line thats not needed now, but lets see how it runs over next few days.
I always run with debug and causes no issue, so would orefer you to keep them running until end of week and then if no issues you can disable.
Providing no issues will commit to OpenViX at weekend.

Will do. Fingers crossed!
Many thanks again to you and @abu baniaz. Your help is much appreciated!

No crashes so far, I'm glad to say. No lingering spinners, no stopped clocks and no new debug logs. Looking good.

Some feedback in case it's useful:
One thing i did notice in hdd/timeshift when Timeshift is enabled, is that both pts_livebuffer and timeshift buffers continue to grow at all times, even though i have not knowingly activated timeshift. I can see why one might be required - say for rewind or pause, but not both. Having said that, I find the UI confusing when I try to pause/rewind/FF after timeshift has been activated. Probably just me and not a bug/feature!

Not only do both buffers grow all the time, but also, if a service has been running for long enough, and pts_livebuffer_2 exists, switching to another channel restarts pts_livebuffer_1 and timeshift buffer but not pts_livebuffer_2, which just sits there. Changing channels again clears pts_livebuffer_2. Not checked with pts_livebuffer_3 etc. Just reporting in case - not a problem for me.

Cheers

I spoke too soon (sod's law!).
Coincidentally, about half an hour ago, I paused the current channel to answer a call. I then unpaused the channel and forgot about it. So when trying to change channel just now, a popup dialog box asked me what to do with timeshift - I chose option 1 - save ts and stop recording. That resulted in an error popup:
No Timeshift found to save as recording!
When I pressed OK to accept, the following messagebox popped up:
Timeshift saved to your hard disk

And sure enough the saved timeshifted programme is there in hdd/movie...

No new debug log, but just noticed that the last one, dated 10.06, is still growing and has reached 8MB!
So it's attached.

Well I guess you have timeshift enabled as default, which starts after so many seconds

debug logs looks OK apart from something using the WEB IF and checking the tuner signal e.g.
08:51:55.3062 "::ffff:192.168.50.124" - - [12/Jun/2025:07:51:55 +0000] "GET /web/tunersignal HTTP/1.1" 200 157 "-" "Kodi/21.2 (Linux; Android 9.0; AFTKA Build/PS7697.4800N) Android TV/9.0.0 Sys_CPU/armv7l App_Bitness/32 Version/21.2-(21.2.0)-Git:20250115-d1a1d48c3c"

Is that you?? Although I guess could be how you interface with Kodi

debug log size set in logs settings.....default is 4MB (may used is 10MB by default) after that should be renewed and old logs deleted _ but may depend on Max days settings

Although I guess could be how you interface with Kodi

I'd like to know how Jerry interfaces with KODI.
I also use Fire Sticks around the house + KODI + E2 Plugin but I have nothing to do with KODI on my satellite box.
KODI just picks up 192.168.1.25 which is my UNO4K and everything is pulled to KODI.

BTW, this morning I tried to upgrade to OpenVIX but it wouldn't load in my saved settings which would mean I would have to start from the beginning which I really don't want to do.
Instead I did upgrade to the latest version of OpenBH and the wife hasn't noticed a difference yet.

saved without my notice

:) ?

"UPDA" can refer to a few different entities:
  • Uganda People's Democratic Army (UPDA): A rebel group that operated in Uganda from 1986 to 1988, according to Wikipedia.

  • Urban Planning & Development Authority (UPDA): This is the name of a government agency in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

  • University of Portsmouth Dental Academy (UPDA): This is a dental academy within the University of Portsmouth.

I know what to do, I've been here a month before you joined but it's just a PITA when it's for my wife's use and OpenBH works perfectly for her all around the house.
Also got to get all the plugins loaded.
It would have been great if I could flash VIX and then the save settings would work.
Thanks though, much appreciated.

only joined 2013 but already satellite here from 1998

just rename the openbh settings backup to openvix format e.g. openbh-rel-5.5.1.001-20250208-1355.tar.gz ----> vix-rel-6.7.1.001-20250208-1355.tar.gz and select after flashing image

ONLY do this between openbh and openvix !!!
