I hope you eventually will be able to give shaz advice and solve his problems, or at least somebody else will be more successful in helping him.

Well, but then if shaz has found problems even if his picon folder layout is correct and you apparently till now can't find an explanation, very likely something is not working as intended in the "modifications introduced to OE-A and PLI images over three months ago"...
Is this a OE-A and PLI images bug as usual?

I am one such person that uses SNP without a problem for months now.

unsure what the problem was but it has been resolved had reflashed 142 for xbmc and picons start to work from usb and hdd
