[ET8x00] Poor SD image after flashing to 4.1.0.16

In a curious mood this morning, so what TV do you have?
I've seen the issue with SD and OpenVIX on the following TVs:

Hisense 65K720
Panasonic 65DX902
LG 65E6

It also did it on my projector which is a Panasonic AE4000.

I think it's one of those things that is more noticeable as you go up in screen size

Does it on my Blaupunkt 50/149Z, TV thinks it is receiving 1080i at 50hz. Flicking between 50/60hz produces no perceptible difference.

You could change the A/V option so that the TV does the scaling rather then the box or vice versa.

Can't remember the option at the moment....

I reverted to v3.2 yesterday and happy to report the SD quality is back to how it should be. No annoying lines down faces or excessively jagged straight lines.

The plugin feeds being disabled is proving to be an issue however. I cannot change skin or update ABM, so stuck with the BBC1 not at channel 1 problem.

So basically I'm in the same boat, damned if I do, damned if I don't. Shame, because the box has been awesome up until Vix v4 onwards.

also in the same boat, 4.2. broken for me, downgraded, all good again, but lost access to feeds. :(

Try 4.1 build 001 mate.
This works ok for me and you get access to the feeds.

Seems to be an increasing problem. Wonder when somebody will acknowledge it.

I take it that by 'somebody' you mean the ViX team?
Well, that's an easy one to answer. When ever an issue is being reported, be it form our users or form one of the team members, we try to reproduce the problem. When we can reproduce it, we try to fix it (which sometimes isn't possible, when it's hardware/driver related).
But when we can't reproduce the issue, there's no way to fix anything at all. So far we haven't been able to reproduce this.

No mate i dont.
I personaly dont beleive its an image problem as you know from my other posts, maybe the nice guys from Xtrend read through these forums, who knows?

What i will say though is if its not the image and its not the drivers or no team can reproduce this on there own Xtrends (which indicates its not driver related) then that only leaves the possibilty that its a hardware fault (and its not any of the 3 tvs i have).

In which case as my box is roughly 9 months old i would want it repaired or replaced, under warranty,if it means sending my Xtrend back to the sponsor so they can witness the problem first hand then so be it.

But im sure you can inderstand how frustrating this is for the small majority of people that have brought this issue to light on here.
At the moment ive got £170's worth of receiver that cant be used to its full potential.

atm I only have a 32"TV at my disposal: on that one I have PQ-issues with my 8000.

And i gather from what you said in another thread that you have reproduced a PQ problem with your et8000, as you only have 1 tv at your disposal you cant say for sure that your issue wont be seen on another tv, ive tried 3...with the same result.

There must be a misunderstanding (or a wrong wording from me): I have not been able to reproduce any issues.

That's exactly why we have several team members. We all have different set ups, different hardware (different LNB's, services, amplifiers, TV's, cables et. etc.), just to be able to complement each other and to be able to reproduce as many issues as possible. But obviously a small team can never cover the whole user-group.

Yeah i can fully understand that mate and im in no way pointing the finger at the VIX team.

I wish there was some easy solution other than the script that was posted here, the box itself is fantastic, but once or if feeds are pulled from 4.1 then it will become next to useless, for me anyway.

As one doesn't experience this issue and another does, this points in the direction of HDMI-compatibility or HDMI-handshake issues. So one more suggestion: disable EDID (in AV-settings) and see if that helps. After changing the setting you need to restart the TV as well as the box. And related to that: it may make a difference if the TV is powered on first or the STB.

PS: I can't check if the ET8k has this option, as I'm running a different image now. So just have a look. And anyway do some experiments with the order of powering up box/TV.

Im certainly open to suggestions.
Ill reflash 4.2 and give them a try.....

Just 1 thing that puzzles me but im sure theres a simple answer for it...if it turns out to be the HDMI handshake then why is it only apparent in builds above 4.1 001? And how does altering the block noise reduction setting fix it?
Ive always had the box wake the tv from stanby using HDMI CEC and never had a problem...
But thanks Rob i will give what you said a try after work and see what happens, anything is worth a try.

HDMI handshake is a very complex procedure, and (for the STB side) completely dependant on the drivers. So in fact we have no clue of what actually goes wrong or right. On top of that there are many sub-formats, or better: many manufacturers create their own interpretation of them. That's the reason the 'disable EDID' has been created.
It's just the only thing I can think of, when using the same TV and the same HDMI-lead, and only a different image leads to issues. Worth a try, will take you only a couple of minutes.

Thanks again mate.
Im just trying to get a better understanding of it all, i will deffenitly give it a try.
1 thing that did come back to mind earlier was when it first happened some months ago i thought my tv was faulty and even asked a friend if he could take a look at it, then 1 night my mrs was streaming corrie (yes i know) to the tablet and she noticed it on that too( i mentioned this in post 4 of this thread but had forgot about it). Thats when i decided to ask here about it, then by coincidence i saw this very thread.
You had to look harder at the tablet hard to see it, but the verical lines were there too.

Why don't you save the drivers from a working image, flash the current image and copy the drivers you saved back? That would tell you if it is a driver issue or not.

Sound idea.

I've seen similar suggestions before, but I don't ever recollect being told what specific driver files need to be copied.

/lib/modules/ KERNEL VERSION /extra/

Not all drivers can be used with all images.

I can confirm I have already tried this, I can also confirm what judge said....as the receiver wouldn't even boot after putting the drivers from 4.1 onto 4.2 it just got stuck with et8000 on the front lcd , but thankyou for your input. it's driving me nuts now, i've spent more time flashing...adjusting...tweaking than even watching tv.

@Rob
Ive exhausted all your suggestions tonight,i cant see a EDID setting in AV, I've tried every possible video setting on the box and tv including "digital clean view" and "MPEG noise filter" in my samsungs picture menu.
I've rebooted the Xtrend and power cycled my tv between each setting change, I've powered the tv on first then the box and vice versa...
I've tried the scart socket....and even streaming to my tablet and mobile phone the vertical lines persist.

the only way to fix it is to alter the block noise reduction setting in the video enhancer plugin or run the script that I have (which does the same thing).
I'd be more than happy if I could find a way to execute the script when waking the receiver from standby or even being able to assign it to a hotkey on the remote so you didn't have to keep going through the menu's to run it.

the vertical lines show mainly on people's faces, heavy thick lines through the nose, jagged images on cartoons ,at times it's like your looking through a frosted window.
