Hello,

Great site, Recently bought a VU duo from the Sponsor and have managed to get it all set up for my family using the info provided here. epg, cam networking etc all good.

Have found one issue that there doesn't seem to be much info on though (or it could be my bad searching).
I have a relatively poor internet historically so i have had a dedicated server for some time (lots of vids, music on it). I normally stream them back from the server using subsonic to lower the bitrate. (hxxp://www.subsonic.org).

as the Vu Duo doesn't run java (to my knowledge) how best do I gain access to my server files from a menu in the duo (is it possible?) (so dont have to have the laptop plugged in as well)

note I have full root access to the ubuntu server so can install anything I might need.
what is the best approach, ftp, smb ?

note my internet has improved in the last 6 months (new estate being built) I now have a stable 2 mb connection (enough to stream iplayer etc)

I would rather not have to download each file before starting to watch etc.

thankfull for any help given

You can mount any suitable drive in your home and play directly from there. Probably you'll have to install NFS first (Menu --> Network --> NFS).

Hello,

possibly wasn't clear in 1st post, deadicated is 150 miles away over the internet.
Looked at nfs over internet and google seems to say it is a bad idea, ie insecure and lag would prevent it working.

Only thing my poor googling skills can find is the vlc streaming to box, but can't see how that can be made into a list thats selectable from the duo remote.

am I looking for something that doesn't exist ?

thanks

How is your knowledge with networks? possibly set up a VPN?
However, to watch a recording on another device without issues is going to require good download speeds with the box you want to watch it on.
Much easier on most home networks, slightly more difficult if the server is 150 miles away.

ok searched that on and thats a lot of information to try and take in. so based on the above

1. Could install VPN on dedicated/(VPS - May test 1st rather than break dedicated) (Found instructions for that) (Looks like a toy i should have anyway)
2. Vu Duo could connect to the vpn on its own with no other kit router Configs in the house. (house remains normal)
3. assuming all vu duo traffic would then go through the dedicated. VPN
4 Download Calculator indicates I should be able to download video 10 - 15 mins faster than watching it so should be able to watch file (is there a buffer setting on the duo for nfs ?)

has anybody else tried this before ?.

thanks

Andy

Well, it's normally not the download speed that's the bottleneck, but the upload speed. I don't think many will have a sufficient upload speed for (HD) streaming. Even on a local LAN many suffer from problems in that area (as we can see in several posts).
