[VU+ Duo2] Transtreamproxy CPU

A friend of mine who is running the latest Black hole image, asked me to see what was my CPU usage during transcoding. His was seeing about 98% on the process 'transtreamproxy'. I tested on the latest VIX image and am seeing similar results.

I realise the problem is likely due to Vu code or drivers, but has anyone else seen this?

we both testing on LAN and WAN
He used VLC, I used Safari on Mac & iOS.
I was using the default transcoding settings in the VIX UI.

Thats not at all unusual, after all you are taking a live tv stream and re-encoding it to a different frame rate all on the fly, that is going to take a lot of processing power no matter what you do. The LCD alone on a Duo2 two takes up 10 percent of the processors power just to display picons with the LCD4Linux plugin.

Fair enough yeah I know what you mean. Just wanted to check if everyone was seeing the same? I presume that's 98% of one core and not them all?

install and use htop. When I transcode the is changing all the time but both threads/cores are working.

Htop is showing about 60% on each core which seems fine. Thanks for the tip.

Thinking about it some more. I would expect high CPU from the Solo2 since that does software transcoding. But the Duo2-it *should* be doing hardware transcoding.

It's still using raw processing power either way so again I see nothing unusual there in my opinion.

on the Solo2 side it is also not only software as the CPU has not nearly enough power to do it on their own. On both it must be a combination of software and hardware but the support on Duo2 is better. You can see that hardware is involved when you transcode and listen to the sound over the rca jacks you will always get the sound of the transcoded channel regardless what you watch on your telly.

It's hardware encoding, so should not be showing a software cpu usage of over 90%. Anyway, my friend has made a fix for this, and posted it over here. I've just tested it and it works great. Less than 2% CPU streaming BT Sport HD to my mobile.

What fix did you made? Can you please share yours transcoding plugin settings?

The fix is to replace the transtreamproxy file in /usr/bin with the one attached to my post above.

I don't take any credit for the fix although I did help QA it. ;-)

Downloaded and attached - note - I've not tried this yet so anyone that does this is on their own.
If you do try it, I suggest you backup any files before you replace!

Attachments contain the updated binary (transtreamproxy.tar.gz)
and the patch file for the code. (trans_cpufix.patch.gz)

Most people who want to try will just need the transtreamproxy binary
Install manually by replacing the existing file "/usr/bin/transtreamproxy".

I would advise checking the permissions of the file also, as mine was wrong after I copied over the file I think. So the steps are:

1. Backup the original file
   

   cp /usr/bin/transtreamproxy /hdd/

2. FTP the downloaded file 'transtreamproxy' to /usr/bin
3. Check the permissions on that file are the same as the previous one you just replaced
   

   ls -l /hdd/transtreamproxy
   ls -l /usr/bin/transtreamproxy

4. Restart Enigma
