For some reason my web interface password is no longer working. I must have set this with telnet in the past but for some reason can no longer log in. Is there a way to set the username back to root and the password blank without re-flashing ?

read this before and it worked for me before when I lost my pass!

in telnet you can change the password by typing
passwd -press enter
enter the required password -and press enter again
confirm the password -and press enter.
now its changed.

That only applies if you have not set a password in the first place, it wont allow you to set a new one if you have forgotten the login details. (or at least it did not last time i tried).

The passwd command works whether or not you have changed the password before. It doesn't know who has set the existing (or non-existing) password and when.
You just need to know the root password to be able to log in as root and use the command..

Originally there is no password in the image, so you just press enter if prompted for password.
If it doesn't work and you can't remember the password or find it in any of your own possible notes, you have to re-flash the image without restoring the settings. That will make the root login work without password again.

That was my point, if you dont know the root login details the passwd command will not work.

If you don't know the root password then you won't be able to login over telnet anyway!
If you are logged in as root then it will let you change the password without giving the old one (since you are root you could edit the shadow file directly anyway, so there's no security in getting it to prompt you for the current one).
And yes - I have just tested this to confirm it.
What it won't do is let you set the password back to being blank/empty. For that you do need to edit the shadow file and set the second field of the first (root) entry to be empty.

If you don't know the root password then you won't be able to login over telnet anyway!

That's stating the obvious !.

Same happen to me. The problem is with webif, was working fine until last update. I know my password and i have no problem to login in ftp or telnet, but if a set up openwebif to enable http authentication password does not work???? Also notice that plugin password charger disappeared.

I have done a software update the issue is now resolved. Not sure if it was a software update or a reboot of the receiver which resolved the issue. However I can now get into the Web interface
