[XP1000] Basic Newbie scanning and ABM question

Hi i have my box all setup and working well but i have a basic question that i would like answered just for my understanding.

Can someone please differentiate between a channel scan and an ABM scan for me please?

My understanding is that ABM finds the channels and categorises them all for me. It also picks up channels which have moved frequency, i get all that. What i don't get though, is for what reason would i ever need to carry out another channel auto/manual scan?


Hopefully, i'm getting my question across well enough. As i said before i'm a relative noobie lol.

ABM is only a recent invention.

Before ABM if a single sky channel change frequency you had to scan it in your self and change the bouquet, or wait for someone else to do it, we would literally see dozens of threads open up for a single channel change, that's largely a thing of the past now with ABM. a whole scan for sky uk would take half a hour then the time needed to organize the channels to you'r liking etc.

Thanks for reply mate. So whats happens differently between a sky scan and an AB scan? and what makes the AB scan faster?

Also my AB scan didnt work until i had run a full sky 28.2 scan on startup. So i take it AB scan doesnt work completely independent of the sky scan?

There are two plugins ABM which is built into the ViX image and maintained by us here and AB 28.2 which is built and maintained by LraiZer, They both grab their data from the same feeds as sky uk does which is why they are so quick. ABM does not need any form of scan prior to running, I have not done a conventional scan in almost a year I only use ABM to generate and update my sky uk channel lists, although i'm not sure if the same is true for LraiZers plugin as i dont use it.


A standard satellite scan relies on a database of known transponders in the image, it uses these transponders to scan the satellite one at a time, which is why it takes so long.

That kind of answers my ultimate question then which was will i ever really need to use a full sky scan again if i'm using ABM. So thats a no?

The thing that has confused me i guess is when setting up my box. I tried ABM to get my channels/lists etc but it just wouldnt work. It only worked after i did a full scan and then an ABM scan and i'm not quite sure why this was.

That sort of made me think that ABM was dependent on the full scan in some way. I recently did a reflash and the same thing happened.

just set ABM to rescan daily. That way whenever channels change, it will be done without you noticing

Thanks mate, yeah that's what i do at the moment.

Just more interested in what the difference was and if i'd ever need to run a full scan again.

I still cant understand though why ABM wouldnt work that very first time without a full scan being done beforehand.
