Random GUI freezes.

Hi andy,

As your doing requests....

Is this one any good?
Code:
root@bm750:~# hdparm -tT /dev/sdb

/dev/sdb:
 Timing cached reads: 900 MB in 2.00 seconds = 449.80 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 56 MB in 3.01 seconds = 18.58 MB/sec

What's the important figure the cached or the buffered?

both, the higher you can get the better, your seems close to mine, and i found it too slow for swap

here the first i tried, and just locked up my box, when accessing swap.

Code:
root@vusolo:~# hdparm -tT /dev/sdb

/dev/sdb:
 Timing cached reads: 360 MB in 2.01 seconds = 178.94 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 24 MB in 3.13 seconds = 7.66 MB/sec
root@vusolo:~#

Maybe that's why mine seems to slow down.
It's also running PTS as well. Which probably won't help.

I seem to get the Spinner every 50mins or so but don't know if that is to do with the SWAP?
Mine never freezes though.
Perhaps I'll get another USB just for Swap.

yup, sounds like your problem, get the fastest you can find a 512mb would do, i need to find a fast one to, but they dont give you transfer speed when trying to buy

Have to try and get some Freebies from work again.
Or take a selection home.

All,

Is there any way to check which is a good one with a windows utility.

Guys these are the values I got.
The USB (sdb1) does seem sub standard compared to the HDD result.

/dev/sda1:
Timing cached reads: 792 MB in 2.01 seconds = 394.28 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 138 MB in 3.04 seconds = 45.36 MB/sec

/dev/sdb1:
Timing cached reads: 792 MB in 2.01 seconds = 394.20 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 46 MB in 3.13 seconds = 14.71 MB/sec

Chris your setup seems to be on steroids.

My cheap integral courier 8gb usb pen drive:

root@bm750:~# hdparm -tT /dev/sdb
root@bm750:~# Timing cached reads: 912 MB in 2.00 seconds = 455.30 MB/sec
root@bm750:~# Timing buffered disk reads: 54 MB in 3.06 seconds = 19.27 MB/sec

Using a 1GB Imation Nano USB Stick, I get the following:-

/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 916 MB in 2.01 seconds = 456.84 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 140 MB in 3.04 seconds = 46.06 MB/sec

Are these speeds adequate?

Please post your device make/model which have high speeds.

sorry to jump in on this thread but im stuck in a loop of spinning vix and then small spinning vix. i have just flashed vix 1.3 and have a usb stick in the back but no swap file, i have a hdd as well, everything was fin until i altered asetting to do withe the epg in vix panel settings, is there anything i can do to cure it? it has happened before and it put me off this img a bit, i use ryvix epg. i have updated the img straight after the install. i can stll ftp to box is there a file i can send you for debug?
