If it was me, I'd look into forking off CrossEPG and then finding the code that updates epg and then insert code that Vix have embedded in their image - see github:

Code:
https://github.com/OpenViX/enigma2/commit/3e2db4ea53d477c27c0fafdc29123c51e7ef9f79
So in theory, epg.dat and epg cache is flushed and then crossepg updates epg again.

.. plus I have EIT, Freesat etc all enabled, and I see seldom (if ever) double entries.
I only have Freeview EIT and I can't recall ever seeing an issue with a schedule change, even at short notice (for a live event overrun) that results in another programme switching channel.

That shouldn't be the case indeed.
Double entries stem mostly from using different readers/imorters for the same service; e.g. EpgImport + EIT for the same services. This can't be prevented, as both can't be enabled/disabled per service.

Is EIT the now&next data?

I just use openTV and I have rare issues with now&next over-riding what the EPG was displaying. This i'm assuming was just last-minute changes after EPG was updated earlier that morning.

I don't use other sources so can't comment on how often that happens.

EIT is the full blown 7 day epg data, including now&next.
Also includes things like start and finish times as programmes actually begin/end, and series link data.

if you are downloading Rytec's data, you are better off using EPG/XMLTV Importer plugin.

It has an option to delete EPG before downloading from the internet.

Now/Next is a special kind of EPG-data. It is indeed in the EIT-format, it can be enabled/disabled separately from the normal EIT-EPG, and it's not being stored in RAM/epg.dat

No, not including Now/Next.
But of course full EIT-EPG-data also includes the current and the next show.

You can actually see the difference between the two in two ways:
1- when (short term) things have changed, see bbbuk's example. When zapping up & down from and to such a service with different Now/Next data you'll see the overriding on every zap.
2- there are many services out there that don't provide full EPG-data (or do so in a proprietary way), but that do provide EIT Now/Next (e.g. all UK services).
