Hi, I'm trying flash image 4.2.006 but when I select restore previous settings it says the settings are not compatible with this build.

Currently using build 4.1.016. Don't want to have to redo all ny settings again

Thats correct, you will have to clean install :)

4.2 requires a fresh flash with NO settings/plugins restore allowed.

If you are happy with your image perhaps not..... but a lot of internal changes in 4.2
Having said that, once you get used to flashing a new image from start it really takes no time at all ... very simple:)

Just copy /etc/enigma2 flash and copy back. You will have your settings and just need to download plugins

Sorry can you explain that in a bit more detail. Even i want to flash to the latest firmware but can not be bothered to sort my channels out. I manually edited all my HD channels which took more over an hour. I tried using those software programmers like dreamedit and e channaliser to get them back when i flashed to 4.2.006 but had no luck
So is there another way around this?

Did you save the channel list to your PC? If so you just send it back to any receiver you want. Whatever image it is on.

Yh i tried that
It was called lambd file or something like that.

Can you do it with filezilla?
Use the channel editor to read the channel/bouquet files from the receiver. Then save them to your PC.

After you flash your image, you open the channel/bouquet files on PC and send to receiver. This is done with the channel editor.

Is channel editor a programme i have to install?

Or you could do as I suggested and copy the entire /etc/Enigma2 directory using ftp or similar to a pc and copy it back again after flashing. Quick and easy.

Not sure what you want me to explain.....

Isn't that effectively what a settings restore does? I thought the whole idea was to start from scratch and not to inherit earlier settings.

Exactly .

Trust me it works fine. I suspect the restore was disabled to stop people restoring plugins.

Settings restore does more than just /etc/enigma2/

config.backupmanager.backupdirs=['/etc/enigma2/', '/etc/fstab', '/etc/hostname', '/etc/network/interfaces', '/etc/passwd', '/etc/shadow', '/etc/etc/shadow', '/etc/resolv.conf', '/etc/ushare.conf', '/etc/inadyn.conf', '/etc/tuxbox/config/', '/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf', '/usr/softcams/', '/etc/auto.network', '/usr/crossepg/crossepg.config', '/usr/crossepg/providers', '/usr/keys', '/usr/script', '/etc/CCcam.cfg', '/etc/samba']

Restoring /etc/enigma2 folder will get most settings back to normal.

There was a suggestion that we have a safe restore option. That idea got pissed on by the "If its not my idea, it is a bad idea" brigade.

It doesn't work fine by just ftp'ing the entire folder back after flashing does it? The guy doesn't know what he is doing so you need to explain to him:
telnet into box, issue the command init 4 then ftp the folder back, after this is completed issue the command init 3.

Me personally i back up bouquets with E-Channeliser, and whilst the box is asleep i paste the important lines back into my settings file as well as the timers and tuxbox/config.
I Never fully restore the enigma2 folder.

Some settings values changed from "False" to "false" (or maybe the other way round) in 4.2.

If any of the checks on these settings were case sensitive (unlikely I suppose), then copying /etc/enigma2 wouldn't have worked as expected.
