[GiGaBlue UHD TRIO 4K] enigma crash - maybe related to crossepg glitching

What is the length (days) of data downloaded from Freeview?

Freeview gets at least 7 days worth, maybe more (or less) depending on the channels. :)

I can currently see the whole of next Thursday 25th March on bbc1 hd (there are plenty of others), so nearly 8 days.

All I do is to set a repeating 10 minute recording timer for BBC1 at 6am. The recording is saved to the trash/recycling folder so that I never see it and it doesn't occupy any disk space.

Is there some reason for you not to use the plugin EPGRefresh?

This sounds like it's intended usecase.

Usually 7 days for over the air EPG. I fetch the over the air Freeview EPG for 10 minutes every day which probably guarantees that I don’t get any holes in the data. Say, if I fetch on a Thursday and there is one program missing on Sunday then the fetch on Fri and Sat will fill that hole.

In my experience fetching the full Freeview 7 day EPG from scratch can take anything from a few minutes to 20 minutes (on Enigma and on non-Enigma boxes).

I stopped using EPG refresh when testing to see if was the cause of the ghost entries in the IEPG data. I haven't gone back since as my (alternative) method seems to work reliably for freeview, plus, epgrefresh has now been removed from the Openvix build and is very unlikely to be maintained as a plugin.

The cause of the ghost entries, or more correctly entries being placed in the wrong time slot, has now been found and is not related to epgrefresh.

Yes, I do. And I just yesterday had a go at fixing a bug (largely cosmetic admittedly) in it but Huevos closed the pull request saying the team needs to discuss it first.
I'm not convinced though. There's another pull request been left open since 2019. Closing it feels much more like what happens when you've rejected the idea completely and don't want anyone discussing it.
It's not like it's complicated. Basically I added a single line to the Python code, a line very much like the two above it.

EPG refresh is in essence just a channel zapper. However, it is random and you don't really have much control of when it does it's thing.

The request to be able to set background zaps with timers so that you can schedule EPG acquisitions from desired channels got rejected 5 years ago. It is now called a "crazy idea".

As far as I know it always runs at the time I choose. There's an earliest and a latest time you set and a wait interval that's presumably to do with what happens if the necessary tuner isn't free. I assume it runs at the earliest time unless something prevents it, that's certainly when I have, on occasion, seen the pop up message saying it's starting. It's unclear exactly what happens if the tuner(s) it needs aren't free but it probably waits and tries a again at intervals you choose until the latest time. It seems to me that the most obvious deficiencies are that you can only make it run once a day and that it has to spend the same amount of time on each channel it zaps to.

I choose times that correspond to a period when I hardly ever watch TV or schedule recordings. It think I set it back as 03:37 to 08:27 or similar at present.

Yes, I remember it being called that.

Just so I'm clear OpenTV just downloads(reads) the EPG data off satellite and saves it to some file. This is then read and specific epg info imported to memory when a channel on satellite is accessed?
Then EIT is always just read into memory when a terrestrial channel is accessed?

Thanks for patience. Slowly groking things

Not quite.

When you absorb the EPG (any type), it will be held in RAM. When you shut down/restart properly, it will be saved to epg.dat

For 28.2, there is
now/next EIT EPG. Absorbed/obtained from signal source while on any 28.2 channel
Freesat EPG. Absorbed from signal source on any Freesat service on 28.2
OpenTV EPG (Sky's ones). Absorbed from signal source while you are on IEPG service/channel

For UK DVB-T, there is
now/next EIT EPG. Absorbed/obtained from signal source while on any Terrestrial channel
7 days EIT EPG. Absorbed/obtained from signal source while on any Terrestrial channel

Seems like you're really proud of calling it a crazy idea.
But too lazy to make any attempt at a reasoned argument against it.

But the facility is already there in the OpenVix build. All I have done is set a daily timer to tune/record a Freeview channel which gets the EPG. It also wakes up the box from deep standby and it means that when I’m on holiday any Autotimer searches on this EPG can also take place and appropriate timers set.

What adm is doing has nothing to do with the "crazy idea".
