Have you tried re-flashing WITHOUT settings restore?

When I do a software update the create backup process never completes and eventually gives a time-out error message. When I click ok the update continues. Likewise, if I try to restore a backup it fails after several minutes with the time-out message.

I looked at both debug logs.
The fact that you have tried a software update several times with issues, implies that the image is now corrupt, so you need to flash a new image - personally I never do a software update and always image flash.
The other log shows that the backup is corrupt - whether actually corrupt or due to some image issue is hard to tell - but I would flash using a different settings backup.

So it looks as if you have tried all your backups most don't finish and the one that does shows...

so the question is have you added file(s) to the normal backup???
If not then there is an issue with your backups to hdd which other people are not seeing.

I have connected a hdd via usb and backup completed in seconds. I just wish that there was a quick and easy way of transferring all of my recordings from the internal hdd before I re-format it.

According to AI DiskGenius for windows will do what you want.

You could disconnect the HDD and use a USB stick (in ext4 file system) and try that to confirm if issue is on HDD.

Or disconnect the HDD, put it in an external caddy and look at it on a PC?
(It is possible to mount an ext4 disk on WSL in MS Windows - if you don't have a Linux system around)
