Well, I can get the movie list sorting setting to update sometimes (could just be the order I did things in, though), but can't get the config.movielist.videodirs (== Locations or Bookmarks) to update until I restart the GUI.
Could it be related to the fact that there is no OK button to "finalize" the changes when setting Bookmarks/Locations?
The python code does mention some "magic" around this, which implies it is trying to be clever in some way.

As far as I remember I've worked out how to add tags to recordings, (although I no longer need them, thanks to 1.:

1. movie list sorting now includes alphanumeric + oldest first
2. tags are now sorted alphabetically
3. Rob now knows about "Sort by"

I still reckon that user-defined Locations need to be sorted, but need to do some more investigation into how they get saved (or don't), but that's not urgent as once they are sorted they stay sorted (mine now are) unless you add new ones (rare). I'll start a new thread once I'm ready.

One further question - what can I do to get the additional code added to RecordTimer.py so that the FPicon on my box actually gives correct info about recordings, rather than being permanently on?

User-defined Locations (also known as Bookmarks) end up in the settings file under the key config.movielist.videodirs. At least mine do, as I can see them there and when I change them that is what gets changed.

OK. Then I can ignore that, as I'm not trying to do anything in that area.
All I want is for the user-defined Locations (Bookmarks) to be sorted so that when you set up a new timer and choose to set an alternate location you can tell when you are going to reach the one you want. They get presented individually which, when not sorted, doesn't give you any clue as to where you are in the circular list. You, apparently, don't use this but I can assure you that for this list to be not sorted is annoying.
