New receiver suggestions, please

My daily use receiver is a GB Quad Plus, now over 10 years old. Still has the original 2.5" HDD. It's a combo receiver and has 2xDVB-S2 and 2xDVB-T2 tuners. It's still working well (occasional odd crash which doesn't seem image related), but it's quite slow to boot (about 100 seconds) although snappy enough in operation.

I'm anticipating that it won't last too much longer, so I'd like to replace it with a newer model, preferably with a multiboot capability (so I can test both Dev and Release images). I'm leaning towards another GB model but only because the remote controls are similar and the boss would find the transition smoother.

Definite requirements - 2xDVB-S2 tuners and at least one DVB-T tuner on board. My local Irish terrestrial provider (Saorview) only uses two multiplexes and uses DVB-T modulation (not T2). If there was a suitable USB DVB-T tuner available which the receiver supported it would be great. The satellite tuners could be unicable compliant, but I only have a conventional universal LNB setup and I don't plan to change it in the medium term. Must support RJ45 ethernet, preferably 1Gb. WiFi not needed.

Ideally 2GB RAM and 4GB MMC for image storage. Must support 2.5" HDD or SSD internally.

I use a Mutant HD51 and an AX 61HD for testing, so am reasonably familiar with those brands and find them quick to boot and responsive. The remotes on both are not great. Neither model is suitable for daily use due to the requirement for minimum two tuners.

Any thoughts, please?

The AXHD61 is a great piece of kit, here is my set up, its multiboot and the remote is one of the best apart from small keys and it has an ir extender, great pic. only drawback 100mb lan. And I have added a dual dtt tuner for saorview.

But you don't say what your budget is, however the best box by a mile is the uno4kse with the added dual tuner like I have on the AXHD61. I have both and the remote on the UNO is out of this world. I got uno on amazon de.

The uno has FBC tuners so number of recordings is awesome, and works with universal/ unicable. Uno does multiboot and takes 3 on hdd but with USB number is limitless.

So this is easy…….. if your budget is OK, then gbquad4kpro …. Brand new box from gigablue/impex-sat.de
Fbc tuners, plugin tuners coming, large (very good) lcd), hdd caddy, all the connections you can think of on the rear and 8 multiboot slots standard.
Petite, fully functional remote, although it helps if you have small fingers(!) …also supposed to be bluetooth, but I haven,t got that to work - but not a big deal for me.
…… and my understanding is that its coming to WoS in the New Year.(I hope thats correct)

So fbc comes either dvb or t2 , so you would need the plugin tuners which should come in the New Year……you must take the gigablue tuners, usb tuners not supported.
I have 2 of these receivers and can only say I am really happy with them.

I didn't quote a budget as I didn't want to constrain the choices. Might end up compromising in the end, but the GB Quad+ was pricy to begin with although it's been great (apart from very slow driver support from Impex at the start).

@bmitie - what make/model of dual DVB-T tuner are you using with the AX 61? The AX61 I have is a combo, so it has one sat and one terrestrial slot. If I bought another one I would get one with two sat tuners, providing I could get a suitable dual USB DVB-T tuner for Saorview.

@twol - the GB Quad4kpro looks interesting, but I'd have to have dual sat and terrestrial tuners from the start. Pity they don't support USB DVB-T. Although I'd prefer to purchase direct from WoS, the VAT/duty situation between UK and EU makes it messy for a purchase of this value. The sponsor may have worked out a pre-pay arrangement with Revenue/Customs at this point, though. I'll check with the boss, but may have to import direct from DE.

Joe its the sony play tv tuner and its dual. the driver is dvb-usb-dib0700. I got them when they were cheap as chips and free postage. They are still available on ebay. The axhd61 is discontinued. I saw the GBQuad pro and looked awesome but when I read lack of tuners I moved on. Its reviewed on linuxsat.

Thanks for the info. I found a Sony Play tuner on cex here in Ireland. €8 plus postage. I've ordered it and will play with it on my ax61. I'll check out the uno - looks like a runner for me if I can get one. Seems to be out of stock in a lot of places. It's sort of lucky that Saorview is using the old DVB-T modulation instead of T2, so the old tuners are available cheaply. As per your screenshot I see that both DVB-T tuners are shown as C and D so I assume that you can record from both multiplexes simultaneously?

I would have jumped at the GB box, but the lack of available DVB-T tuners is a deal breaker.

I would have been more than happy to have bought my gigablue uhd quad 4k pro from WOS as it is in uk and I bought my gigablue quad uhd 4k from here a few years back.

If you are willing to get the tin snips out I think teh existing plugins will work(same connectors etc) except the connection will stick out the back by about 5 cm… not that I have tried!

No sorry don't even have that option I do not have reciever yet they would not even post it without tuner for the moment could be due to extra postage cost, So I will just have to wait plus I was going to use the older quad downstairs

Yes there is differencies in tuner sizes according to captain

Thanks guys for the suggestions. The DVB-T tuners seem to be available from 15th January, but the extra cost puts the GB about €100 more than the VU Uno (plus a cheapie DVB-T USB tuner). With the extra cash I can probably get me a new dish plus a unicable LNB. Happy New Year!

Uno4k only has one slot.

Personally I would skip USB tuners.

An SH Solo4k would be ideal. Only problem with Vu models is audio support when zapping between formats or interfacing with the soundbar.

Apart from that I have always had Vu boxes and really like them.

Question - when I look at photos of the remote for the VU uno4kse I don't see an INFO key. Is this the case as all my other device remotes have that key and I use it a lot to check programme synopsis etc. Is it just a matter of assigning another key to INFO duty?

Vu rcu doesnt have "info" key. Only "epg" key.
Its same for all vu rcu types.

In OpenViX on Vu hardware the EPG key acts as EPG key in InfoBar screens. In all other screens it acts as INFO key. And if you want the INFO key function in InfoBar screens just long press EPG and select the function you want.

I have the Mutant HD51 and the Sony Play TV tuner and its very temperamental.
It only seems to work for a little while after botting up, and then no longer works.
Only way to get it to work is to do a hard reboot.

Ive had the same issue with multiple USB-T tuners on this box, its a right pain, so much so that Im thinking of changing to a Zgemma H7.

I've been using the Sony Play USB twin tuner with the VuUno for the past two weeks and so far so good. The Irish Saorview system (similar to UK Freeview) uses DVB-T not DVB-T2 and this may be a factor. I don't know but it's working fine for me. I only paid €8 for the tuner, probably because they are obsolete except in certain DVB networks.
