vu duo SD quality sucks. if I want to watch rte channels I use ariel rather than sat dish. the integrated SD (not HD tuner) is ten times better than that on the vu duo. HD quality is fine. no amount of playing makes much difference. the duo just has a crap tuner

My duo both SD and HD is excellent picture. Razor sharp. Maybe it's your hdmi lead or tv settings

Its not fair to compare rte on saorview & satellite - the saorview transmission is at a higher bitrate and resolution so the picture via your ariel will be better regardless.

I agree with Ronand on this. The HD version of RTE1 has not yet made it to satellite, so Saorview will be the preference until it does.

The Irish channels on SD are totally brutal to start with. If I watch tv3 for ten minutes, it gives me a headache.

Compare the A/V properties of RTE Two HD to that of BBC HD. RTE broadcast at a lower resolution, don't support dolby digital, and in general seems much worse than any of the UK sat HD channels. Very noticeable when you switch from watching the same Six Nations rugby game on RTE and BBC at the same time.

look I get what you say but I don't change my mind. have dm800 and rte and sky (non HD) perfect. vu duo continues to suck on sd. all folks I know who have a duo complain of same issue

There is no such thing as an SD-tuner....
Remember: PQ is mainly between the ears.
If there would be anything wrong with the PQ of the DUO, the internet would be overloaded with complaints. After all there are thousands and thousands of DUO's in use.

I agree with Rob, the quality of SD is nothing to do with the STB but to do with the fact that its Standard Definition (SD). In this day and age with large LCD LED TV's, SD is showing exactly why HD was invented in the first place!

You should know that cabling is less important too. Back in the SCART era where signals were analog, it was necessary to ensure the signal was of the highest quality which usually meant an expensive SCART lead.
HDMI uses digital signalling, so either the DATA gets there or it doesn't!!
With the minor exception of really long cables a cheap HDMI cable (that is not physically faulty) is going to work just as well as a dearer one.
Despite this, companies will still try to maximise profits by selling expensive gold plated HDMI cables but its all marketing fluff which you shouldn't fall for!

Have to agree with 'Fintannl, hdmi stopped working on my original VU+ duo so I'm usin a scart to my 42'' Tv and the picture quality is terrible, was very happy with sd chanells through hdmi output but its a massive diiff to using scart, also, I did change the av setting output from hdmi to scart..

If I understand you correctly, you're saying that SD-scart doesn't provide a fine picture?
Well, that would make sense: it's an analogue signal with a much lower resolution than SD via HDMI. The two are not comparable.

Tbh I didn't realise the scart would be so poor, I'll have to connect my old pace box to compare, think I up took earlier post wrong to what op was trying to get across about tuner,( don't think tuner should have effect on actual picture quality) I had no complaints with sd quality through hdmi but going back to scart was a big shock!!!

I must clarify. SD does not look like HD with the Zgemma and apologies for that comment. It just looks better. I have a buddy of mine who also switched from vu to zgemma and he figures the same. Maybe its an optical illusion or maybe tuner technology is developing?
