Skinning concept

Well transparent label over pixmap is not the best way.
Did you tried with eRectangle under the transparent label?

you mean:
backdrop -9
eRectangle -8
elabel -7
?
ah, i see: the hope would be that elabel transpacency makes eRectangle disappear and leave backdrop alone.
no, havent tried that yet.

doesnt work either. looks like the transparency goes down all the way to tv.

Transparency of eLabel shows the desktop (e.g. live tv).

... independent of how many levels are below.
Yes.

It is probably broken in all PLi derived images, including OpenATV and OpenViX... but fixing this would be a major rewrite and probably break backwards compatibility. And there is going to be a workaround. You just need to experiment. Probably the most knowledgable person here on multiple layers is Dimitar so you need to listen to what he says. If you just write "the recommendations don't work either" or "doesnt work either. looks like the transparency goes down all the way to tv", that is not going to help you get a fix. Each time you need to post the code you are trying and the result, preferably with a screengrab.

if that statement is true, and all my experiments confirm that it probably is, i dont see that a workaround is possible unless there is a way to create the "grey haze" without transparent elabel. in dreamos they use a special epixmap for that.

For the haze layer you can use an ePixmap (but then you need a graphic).

ok, i assume you mean an all black graphic. but how do i specify the transparency level?
something like:
Code:
<ePixmap pixmap="black.jpg" transparency="0.7" position="0,0" size="e,e" zPosition="-7"/>

Code:
<ePixmap position="70,30" size="1780,90" pixmap="images/transblack.png" zPosition="1" alphatest="blend" transparent="1" cornerRadius="12"/>

it basically works. but it drastically slows down rendering... so moving thru a list is not fun. there is also some light flickering.

Well you dont specify what you want to achieve in global aspect.
What list? Lists have different handling....
If you look e2embyclient plugin there are lists with graphics....
But as i said you give too little information....

Which box? HiSi?

i would show you a screenshot... but when i do one with webif the backdrop layer is missing although it's shown on the screen.
the plugin is a tmdb info plugin i did for dreamos and now porting it over to open. it displays a text list of movie names and for the selected movie on the same window the backdrop with haze and the poster (without haze). both backdrop and poster are downloaded on demand from internet and are displayed when they arrive.
the plugin did not have performance issues on dreamos.
