Have you tried re-flashing WITH a settings restore?

YES

The roundel to indicate a software is available is repeatably showing. I have updated in a number of ways and the one most recommended was to download the latest image from the website onto a usb stick and then flash.

This has been showing for the last couple of image updates.

The best way to find out what is pending is to do so by command line.

opkg update
opkg list-upgradable

Please also bear in mind that some items are not part of image. Picons, channel lists and a few odd plugins that install their own "feeds". So even if you are on the latest image, they will still have updates.
