If I use only two of my three tuners, can I connect the third tuner usint the loop-through cable that comes with the box? And if I use the loop-through cable, does that mean that the third tuner can only show channels on the same transponder as the tuner it is connected to?

if your looping the tuner internally you dont need a cable as like the Duo the Ultimo has a internal loopthrough ( at least i believe it does ). and yes your correct by using loopthrough on the third tuner you are restricted to channels on the same transponder / polarity as the tuner it is looping from.

Sorry:
1- The DUO has an internal loopthrough; the Ultimo needs an external cable;
2- The 'looped through' tuner is not restricted to the same transponder, but to the same 'quadrant' (i.e. same polarity (H/V) and frequency band (High/Low)).

Thanks for the clarification, although it is worth noting that i have never used loopthrough as i have more than enough feeds for the receivers i have.

So am I right in assuming that only 2 tuners can be looped through and if you have an Ultimo with 3 DVB-S2 tuners you would need either 2 LNBs or a splitter as well as the loop through cable?

Well, all Ultimo tuners have a hardware loop-out, so all can be looped trough.
But if that's really what you want

Why the scratchy head? All NZ channels come from Optus D1 and are the same polarity so only one LNB is required....

And apparently also in the same frequencyband.

Why the scratchy head?
Because that's a very unusual situation, maybe even unique. I have never heard of any user being happy with such a limited setup. But of course: if you're happy you're happy. And more then that: you're lucky!

Mysky boxes are supplied by Sky NZ with 4 tuners all looped through. They only connect 1 lnb to tuner 1. In fact the firmware in the boxes only allows connection to tuner 1. My VuDuo has only one LNB connection and the 2 tuners looped through. I can recieve every channel available in NZ but if you can suggest a better setup for me I am all ears :)

if thats the case for you in NZ then your very lucky as in the UK and Europe we need to have 1 feed from the lnb going to each tuner of the receiver for best results. loopthrough does give us some options but they are extremely limited and no where near as good as a separate feed for each tuner.

This is why it is common place to see dual, quad and even octo feed lnb's fitted to dishes here. I my self have 3 dishes ( 2 fixed dishes each with a octo feed lnb for sky uk and a third motorized dish with a dual lnb ).

Yes, I understand the situation in the UK. We do get dual and quad lnbs installed but Sky uses it for multiroom setups running seperate cables to different rooms. As I said we are only served by Optus D1 directly so only 1 dish required.

Anyway before buying an ultimo with 3 DVB-S2 tuners I wanted to make sure you could loop through to all the tuners. Rob has indicated you can so I guess I can buy. We have to source these boxes from Europe directly as they are not retailed in NZ so there is no way to physically check.

Thanks for the advice.

each tuner card has a loopout

Indeed: you are lucky being served by frequencies and polarizations being all in the same band. That really makes life easy for you (and makes me a bit jealous).
And indeed: all tuners can be looped through. The DUO has an internal loopthrough, the UNO and Ultimo have external loopthrough options (using a cable).
Nevertheless: there are no other (interesting) transmissions you could receive in your area (and thus probably requiring a more advanced LNB-setup)?

The tuners in Ultimo can not support loopthrough. Only the same polarity and same quadrant. No signal pass through on standby or deep standby.
I just bought a ET9500 and everything works like a charm.

Yes they do. I have 4 Ultimo's and I use this option all the time.

Only the same polarity and same quadrant.
Of course: that's the principle of satellite reception: part of the tuning is done in the LNB, so as soon as an LNB is in use it can only be used for other transponders in the same 'quadrant'.
And that's what OP is after.

No signal pass through on standby or deep standby.
In deepstandby the unit is completely switched off, so the LNB's have no power. So of course there is no signal on the LNB-loopthrough.
In standby this works like a charm.

The ET's do the same as the VU's in this area, apart from the fact that they require a special setting to get the loopthrough working when the box is in standby (LNB power set to 'On' in standby).
