Subwoofer problems

Hi

I have an Onkyo amp that I plug all my devices through using HDMI. With my Xbox or with normal SD chans my subwoofer works fine but when I watch a HD chan or video with digital sound my subwoofer doesn't seem to work. I think I've narrowed it down to my solo2 because everything else including PC seems to work fine. I've not been able to find any settings for audio in openvix other than digital downmix which does fix the problem but I'd obviously like the digital sound. Has anyone came across this problem or know what to do?

Thanks in advance

Hi,
when downmix is activated and you get the sound you like then it might be a misconfigured AVR. Subwoofer normally is only responsible for the .1 in DD/DTS X.1 and on Stereo the low frequency signals are mixed to the main speaker. On my Onkyo HDMI Audio output must be off and you should set you speaker to small (or enable doublebass) with a cross over frequency of 80Hz then your sub should work with digital but it must be at least 5.1 and it should be an action film.

ciao

Thanks for all the replies. I had tried a fair bit of fiddling with the amp and doublebass, cross over frequency etc. but I'm not sure HDMI audio output is off. It's live music on MTV HD etc. that I'm keen on getting working properly. I'll get a look at it this evening and report back. Cheers!

Hi,
Music is no real indicator because hardly any music goes below 40Hz. Try watching an action movie in DD with AVR and Sub.

ciao

I've a feeling it's probably working OK but I'd really like the amp to use more bass for MTV Live and other music channels. I'll work something out. Thanks for advice.

Hi,
in AVR setup you should be able to give your Sub +5-10dB to get a better kick. If it is possible and how it very AVR depended.

ciao

I record an action move for about 10 minutes with a lot of bangs, like 2012 to test the system. I have my amp on THX setting. In music- Smoke on the Water in DTS should test it. I also set up the amp in manual with a sound test.

Thanks all! Seems that I was just watching things that didn't have the .1 in them.
