[GiGaBlue QUAD] [NOT QUAD+] recording problem

When you did that, did it stop rebooting?
To be honest i only had it on there for about 3 minutes as i was holding the whole fan over it..After i took it off it steadily rose back up into the high figures. I assumed that if i had kept the fan on then it would have stayed around the 47 mark and maybe rising abit with recordings but i will try it again tomorrow and set 3 recordings off and see what it rises to

Speaking as a none GBQ owner I personally would have tried a Lap Top Cooler just to see if it made any difference and stopped it reaching that magical 99c, you can pick them up for under £10 on ebay or even something better like a Zalman NS2000 for about £25 with variable fan control would be worth the investment

Yes true, but the point we were making is that it never happened before 026..so something happened in between the upgrade..Hopefully it may be sorted in the next few days but i'll do my fan test tomorrow

Well I seem to have tried quite a few things now. I have gone from 024/026/028/029 and now back to 020. Numerous problems but started with bad recordings on 024. Flashed the new GB Quad bootloader that I was told needed to go on for the new 025 upwards. Did that, flashed 026 (latest at that time) and had problems ever since. Box keeps rebooting, recordings are pixelated sometimes or just freeze. The front display panel keeps failing and displays coloured horizontal lines. The EPG will not update from the CrossEPG plugin and reboots the box when it tries to load the data.

I have uploaded some log files from the home/root/logs file from Filezilla.

I really don't know where to go from here. Do I go back an load a different bootloader and go back a few image generations. Any help would be gratefully received.

I would perhaps wait as Judge says in post 78 for the new build over the next few days, hopefully it will resolve the problems....Although i havent' had any problem with my front display..that may be a different problem..I have tried the same builds as you and with the new and previous boot loaders and get the same results each time

OK, it just seems every new build that comes out does not resolve the problem on the Quad. I don't have these issues with the same image updates on my other solo2? So I guess it must be something to do with some compatibility issues with the GB drivers. Don't know enough about it to second guess though. I will have to swop the GB for the solo2 in the main lounge until this issue is resolved.

I have faith in the Vix team to sort this out! Even though I have been getting very grumpy over the last few days!!

there are some new drivers and kernel edits earlier this evening

Seems to be an issue with some Quads, not all Quads, which makes it a lot harder to track down. Best to try with the next ViX build when it's available.

OK will do. I'm sure it must be a minefield trying to identify software glitches. Praise to anyone that understands that level of coding.

I'll test it when it is published. Will it be an online update or require a complete flash?

Thanks I will flash when available.

Thanks Richard.

I obviously realise there's not a hardware problem, but I feel like I'm going mad and wondering if I imagined the box was stable with the lid off etc.

Not trying to disprove what WoS said, I do believe them, just saying what I experienced and it would be nice to know I haven't completely gone insane :)

The temps are wrong. A box running at 98 you would not be able to put your hand on the case.

Hi Justaboo
Ok i did my test
The box started of at 87 with no fan...I put the fan on and it went down to 53 in a couple of mins (it's a largish fan so more powerful than any laptop or internal fan)
I set off 3 recordings for 30 minutes and the box rose from 53 to 59 and a couple of times it went to 60..after 30 mins i set off another 2 recordings (hd this time) for another 30 mins, so i had 5 recordings running at the same time and the box never got over 61, majority of the time was at 60. Stopped recordings and took fan off and temp is steadily rising
So to clarify had a 1 hour of recordings, 3 for the 1st 30 mins and 5 for the next 30 mins) temp stayed constant and no reboots

Hi Stanman
Yes we realise this and it isn't a problem if the reading is wrong, but the problem for us is that as soon as it reads 99 the box reboots which is quite often especially when recording and even just watching tv without recording

Thanks Richard, which is exactly what I saw. I could stop the box rebooting by lowering the temp.

I'm glad I'm not going mad.

Hmm, the more I think about it, the more I'm convinced there are two separate issues.

There's the mem frag issue that will hopefully be fixed in the next release any time now.

But, similar to what I found, if Richard can lower the recorded temp by putting a fan on it and that stops the box rebooting, putting a fan on will not stop a memory fragmentation issue happening.

Hence if the reboots are mainly caused by this memory issue, then his (and my box when I tested it) box should still have rebooted and it shouldn't have mattered what his temp readings are.

Which is what I've been trying to tell you guys all along.

Unless of course there's two issues closely connected where the mem frag does something that causes the CPU to heat up which in turn causes the problems we are seeing.

The more I see of this error, the more I am convinced that there is some trigger (either in enigma or in the hardware) that causes a reboot when the measured (not actual!) temperature reads 100C. The memory fragmentation issue causes issues with playback of recordings, certainly. Your experiments seem to show a constant correlation between temperature measurement and reboot.

Thank you for doing the Fan Test richardinspain at least we know now that you can lower the temps to stop it over heating, or prevent the receiver over reading the temps and stop it from rebooting, obviously this is only a short term fix as the problems are more intricate and deeper than just the temps hitting 98/99c but at least you have proved that it can be prevented in the short term until a proper fix can be found

No worries, glad to do the test...as i said it was quite a powerful fan but i'm sure a laptop fan would help a lot..
At the moment my box is a stationary high 96 with just watching tv...and has booted about 3 times this afternoon..Also noticed that if i watch a hd channel it raises the temp by 2/3 points, so at 96 its critical i watch a sd channel lol..It is hot here though at the moment, sitting here in me pants, just like Justaboo was a few days ago..I should rephrase that, i mean Justaboo wasn't here in his pants, he was at home in Norfolk:confused:
