[GiGaBlue QUAD] [NOT QUAD+] recording problem

One last time, the temps are simply a coincedence, the Quad randomly reboots and varying temps I've seen it for my own eyes. I've personally tested many builds.

@ Richard please re-flash you receivers with build 003 to ensure you have defo flashed 003 and do not restore any backups http://www.openvix.co.uk/index.php?...d 024/&file=openvix-Apollo.003-gbquad_usb.zip

Also test this image here

Hi Sicilian
Are you saying that at one time when my box hits 99/100 the ACTUAL temp of the box is different from another time it hits 99/100?..We obviously know that the box isn't really at that temp but just trying to understand when you say "the quad randomly reboots at varying temps"
All i can see is that my box reboots every time it hits 99/100 and not at any other time
I know you most probably think that i'm going on about it, but we are only discussing our findings...I know things are being sorted in the back ground...I'm waiting patiently for the new build

It is 003 i am using , i downloaded it fresh yesterday from the link in this thread but i will try flashing it again..I tried openmips yesterday too but it was version 4.0 not the one you have just posted so will try that now
Thanks for the help
Richard

try that with new drivers and kernel edits, see if prob has gone.

Same for me, I repeated it well over 50 times, up to 99C box remained fine. Lid off windows opened temp dropped to 80 something and the box kept going for ages and ages with zero problems, right up to me replacing the lid and closing the windows and the temp climbing back up to 99.

In nearly a week of me playing and testing, not once did it reboot before the displayed temp was 99.

Stef at WoS said it was rebooting at various temps but he tried various images. For me, on 24 and 26, until it got to 99, it was 100% fine. I've included screen shots in earlier posts.

Sorry, I'm not meaning to be rude to the boss or anyone else, I just don't get it why neither you or Stef at WoS believe me.

I asked Richard if he could do a test on the off chance my mind has gone, and he has produced exactly the same result and I can't see how this is due to mem frag. Seems more like the problems still there with 03 but for whatever reason my box runs a few degrees cooler than Richards, hence on 03 mine didn't reach 99 where as Richards is reaching 99 and is rebooting.

While I appreciate the speed WoS looked at my box, they refused to believe me and refused to do the fan test on 24 themselves simply responding as per my quote earlier in this thread.

I feel like Richard and I are being mocked, not taken seriously, maybe if people started listening to what we've experienced in our many tests, we can help get to the bottom of this much quicker? I'm beginning to feel like there's no point trying to help.

I even posted that open mips link in an earlier post for Richard to try as Stef told me that should work, but it was removed.

It's really beginning to get to me now, I'm sure you guys don't mean it, I've tried to put on a friendly polite face, but this is beginning to feel quite unpleasant if I'm honest

Hi Rossi
Thanks for the link, Should 024 be flashed with the new boot loader or the previous one..Flashed a few times and i can't rightly remember
Thanks Richard

new bootloader mate.

this is the changelog for the drivers but no mention of the 2 issues mentioned here:-

fixed splitscreen at tuxtxt
fixed splitscreen when PIP
fixed sd video output when the refreshrate is 60hz.
removed modversions
added /proc/stb/lcd/oled_brightness

worth a try

Hi all
Ok i have done a couple of tests, i had to use the fan while flashing as i didn't want the box to shut down during flashing

The 024 version that Rossi gave me (and thanks very much Rossi) is much the same as before..The temp started off at 89 for me..I set off 2 recordings and went up to 96... and on the 3rd recording it was too much and rebooted..Now this wouldn't normally be a problem for me as i rarely have 2 recordings going together let alone 3 but it is a bit cooler here at this time of day and if i was watching tv earlier then it would have been higher....But i must congratulate you Rossi and anyone else involved on the GUI, as soon as it flashed and was on the set up screen i was impressed..The menus and colours were great..I loved it!

The openmips image that Scicilian (thanks Scicilian) posted was much better performance wise..The only problem is that it doesn't have a temp guide so was a bit blind and would only know if there was a problem if the box rebooted..I started off with 3 recordings and after 30 mins was still ok so i started off another 2 recordings so had 5 running at the same time, took the dogs out for a quick walk and came back and was still recording..So i had 5 recordings running at the same time for about hour..I thought i would just go one better and set another 1 off, which i did, a hd channel this time and as soon as i did it rebooted so i think i pushed it to it's limit..I was pleased as it is a vast improvement...I still have the 024 image on at the moment to test but i will put the openmips on again to give it another test and check playback of recordings etc
Cheers

Will ABM run on the openmips image?

yes that is exactly what he is saying.

1. The reported temperature being displayed in the about screen is wrong, this has been reported to the manufacturers and as a result they have amended the drivers to remove this erroneous reading.

2. The actual temperature at which the receiver reboots is not a fixed value but fluctuates, Sicilian has tested this with a infrared thermometer multiple times.

Now we are not saying there is no issue here as there obviously is, but it is NOT temperature related.

None of us disagree that the temp reading is wrong.

But as Richard and I have shown time and time again, it's only when the box THINKS its at 99C that the box reboots.

If the temp display is removed but internally somewhere enigma2 still thinks it is incorrectly reading 99C, then our problems will persist.

You say it's not temperature related, but we can stick fans on and STOP the box rebooting all the time the fan is on there, that being the case, how can it not be temp related in some way?

Stef has offered to recall my box (it's currently on it's way to me) and send to Germany for a second opinion.

I want to stress I am very very happy with the level of service I have received from Stef, I don't dispute his findings at all

As I have said on my previous posts, sometimes I recorded 3 progs and watched a forth and the temp dropped a degree and it worked fine, other times it went to 99C and rebooted just watching live TV. It's not consistent at all, so what he saw doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

Had Richard not experienced problems with 03, I would be more than happy to receive the box, but as Richard has had the same problems with 03, for all I know I will get the box back and see it reboot again.

Richard and I seem to be experiencing this at different times (I say time, I mean watching just live TV, recording just 1 channel, recording 3 channels etc) , and although recording 2 or 3 progs seems to do it more often it's also happening at other times for us.

And I do need to stress, this is repeatable 100% of the time for me, if I had the box here, I would record a few long you tube vids 1) showing the temp reaching 99 and it rebooting, 2) showing the temp reaching 98, me turning a fan on, the temp falling and it not rebooting the whole time I'm, keeping the fan on, me turning the fan off, it getting back up to 99 and it rebooting.

I've taken Stef up on his offer and my box is now being sent to Germany. I'm not convinced it is hardware, but I would rather get a second opinion than have to spend another £16 (with insurance) shipping it back again if the problems still there.

What I don't get is why so few of us are experiencing the rebooting problem (again sometimes happens just recording one prog etc), could it be a simple matter of a few boxes are running slightly hotter and it's these few that are causing problems?

And the thing that confuses me most of all is I ran 15 and 24 for ages and had zero problems, it was ONLY after I upgraded to 26 that my problems started, so why has going back to these previous versions not fixed the problem?

Maybe something along the lines of the following is happening?

Completely made up numbers just for this idea.

You test the box with an infra-red thermometer, it reads 67C and the box reboots, but, the reported temp under menu/info is actually 99C, hence the box thinks it's too hot and reboots.

You test again, this time it's only 61C and the box reboots, but again the box incorrectly for whatever reason thinks it's reached 99 hence it thinks it's too hot and reboots.

When a big fan is put over it, the actual temp is dropping to say 47C, but it's dropped low enough so that it's under whatever threshold the wrongly reported temp thinks is 99, therefore it never reaches the point where it thinks it's overheated and reboots.

The fan is removed, the actual temp now goes to 64C and the box reboots, but again at that point for whatever reason the reported temp is 99C.

Clutching at straws here, but that sort of thing would tie in with both what you guys are seeing and what me and Richard are seeing?

Hi all
Ok had more of a chance to test openmips 4.2 yesterday evening and today
It functions much better but i have had a couple of reboots
Yesterday evening i had 4 sd recordings going at the same time for a hour and worked fine, i went to set off a 5th recording hd and a few seconds later the box rebooted
After this i did a further test set off 3 sd recordings and a hd recording (4 in total) and recorded for a hour with no problems, pressed the video button to go into the files on my hard drive and as soon as the button was pressed it rebooted
Then i set up 5 sd recordings over night from about 1pm and they were still recording this morning at 11am so 5 recordings over 10 hours and no reboots
It seemed to work fine just going through menus and watching tv so all in all much better but does still have some issues along the way (with my box any way)
I'm assuming that playing/recording a hd channel as oppose to a sd one needs more power from the box??
Has anyone else tested this image? and what were your findings?
Cheers Richard

Yes this is the strange thing that i don't understand either..Everything was fine until the change..It can't be a coincidence..And you would have thought reverting back would have solved it..Im going to try 003 again just to make sure i get the same results as yesterday..It would be interesting to hear how many others have the same problem and how many don't have a problem at all

Did you revert back to the previous bootloader

Have you yet to give the go ahead for the box to be recalled and go back to Germany?...If it hasn't already i'll download a fresh 003 and try it again and see what results i get...Has anyone else reverted back to 003 and has solved the problem (and tested it with multiple recordings etc)

ok i have put previous boot loader on 20130507 and i am still able to boot up the new open mips 4.2 image..Should this happen? i assume openmips 4.2 is new and would use the new bootloader?

Yes - the new bootloader is optimised for the new builds (OE 2.3 (or OpenMIPS 4.2) or ViX 025 onwards). I understand that a ViX build (030) is underway and will include the modified drivers from Gigablue.
