[GiGaBlue QUAD] [NOT QUAD+] recording problem

True, but it still comes down to reputation and buyers will soon defect to other units if they fail to respond to customers problems

yeah but Apple are a multi billion dollar company, Gigablue are not (not that I am defending them on this mind you).

True & if Apple were this slow they wouldn't be either.
I'm not an Apple fan but if they have a problem then they fix it not blame someone else.
If they don't get a handle on this quickly people will go elsewhere.
Perhaps they already have ?

IF the box is NOT in reality overheating then try this scenario.

The box is running 30' but the software says its 50'.
You do a few recordings etc & the temp goes up to 60' but now the software tells the box its 100' & you get a reboot.

You fit a fan & the box is running 20' but the software says its 30'.
You do a few recordings etc & the temp goes up to 40' but the software says its 80' but since this is short of 100' you don't get a reboot.

By fitting a fan you are starting from a lower temp base.
The software is still telling the box a higher temp but starting from such a low base because of the fan the box never reaches a temp which results in a reboot.

Perhaps this is a simplistic way of looking at the problem.
If this is the type of scenario that is happening you would think it would be pretty simple to deal with ?

I have a Quad Plus but haven't done much with it yet as I've only had it a few days.
I've looked at the temp after its been on for a while & it says 39' ?

I believe that's more or less what I said in my last sentence a shorter version.
as the fans that are being put on must be bringing the temperature just below the maximum threshold therefore no crashes.

No, as I've explained in my earlier posts, without the fan my box was constantly wrongly reporting 99C then a couple of minutes later rebooting (when it thinks it's got to 100)

Since putting in the fan, it runs so much cooler that with the same software version under the same conditions (recording 3 things while watching a forth) the box no longer wrongly thinks it's getting to 100C, the highest mine thinks it's getting is now 59C.

All my reboot problems have 100% stopped since fitting the fan, others have reported the same thing. On the threads I linked to earlier, other users experienced the same problem (and a fan fixed this) well over a year ago. Which makes me think some quads run hotter than others hence mine wasn't affected until the recent bootloader change.

5 weeks is long enough for me to have an unusable box, it is now working perfectly. Maybe they will bring out new drivers this week, maybe in 2 months time they still won't be fixed, I (and others) gave up waiting and our problems are now solved.

I went the more drastic route of cutting a hole in the top, my warranty expires next month so it makes no difference to me. Others have mounted fans without cutting the case and their problems have also stopped, so it can still be done without affecting the warranty and a small fan costs about £5.

I emailed the 3 gigablue addresses Sicilian posted in post 230, I got replies from two of them (post 239), I replied to both and got further replies from both. One of the replies I quoted in post 239 says installing a fan won't affect the warranty, obviously me cutting a big hole in the top is a different thing and will affect it.

With regards to your above post

since installing the bootloader that started this problem, I had reboots (prior to my fan) regardless of whether I ran ViX or Openmips (I tried various Openmips versions).

I thought gigablue gave a two year warranty as that is what I got with my box. The only image that I know of has no problems is openATV 4.1 which I use with vix skin at present due to crashes and many other users on other forums are doing the same. I have had no problems at all since I changed.
I hope its resolved soon as the vix images are more user friendly.

Can you imagine if Apple had this delay in fixing a bad software update! There would be riots in the streets :)

That's the price we get from going with a small company I'm afraid, chances are there's only one or two people in house working on drivers (might even outsouce).

Mind you, big manufactures have in the past been very very slow to admit faults, better if they find a solution then admit the fault than admit the fault first (in their eyes, not in mine, I would have more respect if they simply came out and said "we messed up, we're working on it")

Ah, just saw on their site it's 2 years.

Only 12 months with the retailer though, if the main board died, I'm sure they would still look at it regardless of my fan mod as all it interferes with is the lid. even more so as I only had to do this due to their actions.

Usually though things like that die in the first few weeks or so of use and then carry on for years.

With my box now running much cooler, even less likely to break. I'm not worried.

It will probably go bang later :)

 No they are excellent box's I have no idea why they never put a heat sink and cooling fan on the box I suppose it all boils down to cost at the end of the day.
if they don't resolve the issue soon I will be putting a heat sink and fan on mine if it starts to overheat but to date I have had no issues apart from freezing on boot screen when I first updated the boot loader but I just changed my image to that recommended for this issue and had no problems.
Every one blames the boot loader but the boot loader only loads the kernel and image drivers then stops working until a new boot up to my knowledge.

Because it isn't needed. The box stays cool enough, even with an internal HDD.
would have been very useful in this situation would it not people would not be ripping there box's apart to fit fans I have always aired on the side of caution found it the safest bet as I said cost at the end of day.

Wow wtf has been going on with peoples gigablues? I'm running one of the early vix-HD images and haven't had any of the problems reported in this thread.

But that's a software fault.
Not using the box also helps....
I Do understand what your getting at.:lol3:
nothing is personal on here its only my personal opinion after observation and analysis.:trustme:
“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it
I have my box under the stairs its on a shelving system that does make it run a bit warmer than usual at a max 58 degrees usual with one tuner and hdd at rest 45 approx. I have no fan on it however next to it is a xbox fan under my dreambox.

just don't update your boot loader and you should be fine.

:trustme:Has anyone checked their serial numbers on the quad if it is the following A BAD BATCH WITH THE SERIAL NUMBER STARTING 'YAD1309'???
they reboot randomly and have problems loading image if you have contact Gigablue or return to seller who will return it its on their site.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:baby:

When I emailed gigablue, they asked me for my serial.

Mine starts YAD 1212

I remember reading about the batch but think I also read Stef said there was no bad batch.

Could be wrong, usually am :) think it was a couple of owners with problems deciding the whole batch was bad but turned out not to be the case.

I think that I was lucky when I Ordered and Paid for my Gigablue Quad in February as they had ran out of stock and where waiting for new stock to be delivered, it then turned out that the Original Quads had been Discontinued in favour of the Quad Plus but the supplier from Finland could not give me a date when the new Quad Pluses where being shipped so I paid 20 Euro more and purchased a Solo2 :D:cool:

Think this is a red herring. 1309 did have issues for some but there was no definite link to serials for the issues reported. I have one and it is rock solid.
As previously stated it is most likely a combination of things.

GB do take time in fixing issues. There were many when the Quad was released but they did sort them, except GBLAN I think, but they did sort them. I expect they will sort this, and the Front panel display issue, but they need time. As also mentioned GB do not have the resources of Apple.

I suspect users scrambling to report their YADs may do no good.

Just reporting what I have read may be a load of bull, trawled gigablue home site many problems on there site mainly operator error from what I can see I had a few problems myself which I believe were caused by myself my box is running fine and I have the latest bootloader on mine it also states on some images there are other kernel software problems and very few like this thread.
its all in the international section just need to search easy to find.

So, is there an official GB link to returning certain YAD numbers like you said or not?
