Hi,

One of the reasons I invested in a new receiver was because Humax occasionally threw a wobbly and forced a hard disk reset which meant we lost all our recordings.

Last night, I watched a recorded TV show then turned off and went to bed. This evening we sat down to watch something and to my horror, EVERY SINGLE RECORDING had been wiped. I am quite sure I did nothing that could have caused it. Rebooting had no effect and checking with FileZilla shows that the /media/hdd/movie folder was empty, well not quite. A programme recorded this evening was in the movie list, the only item. I checked and both timers and auto timers are intact so the programme had recorded as usual.

In addition, the trash folder was also completely empty so I could not recuperate them from there.

[Edit]. Forget about the logs question. /home/root/logs is also empty!

So what has happened to the list of films and programmes I have carefully recorded over the last few months? And is there any way to recover them? Will any of the logs show me what might have happened?

Geoff (in serious trouble for changing the system from Humax).

Check MENU > SETUP > VIX > MOUNT MANAGER and make sure your HDD is mounted as /media/hdd.

How are you powering the box off? Deep standby before cutting the power?

If this is the same HDD as in the humax then it points to HDD issues ………I have had this receiver since 2017 when it first shipped in Germany - and never an issue with HDD recordings
I assume by turned off, you put the box into standby and didn‘t power off the receiver

Hi Willo,

Normally we do not switch it off (at the mains). We just turn it off into standby using the power button on the remote. (Is that standby or deep standby?).

However we did have a complete power outage this afternoon which is probably the source of the problem. I will check the mount status and get back.

Hi Twol,

No the Humax is still attached and running as a backup with its 2 TB drive intact. This is a 500 GB HDD recovered from my MacBook Pro (whose graphical chip had broken down) and which I installed when the box arrived.

'lo again Willo,

Yes you are right, the HDD is reported as unmounted. There were too many options so I did not try anything. Not sure if I click red (Use as HDD) or the mount option. I do not want to risk any data loss so which option do I use to remount it please?

[/qute]

A short press of the power button on the remote puts it into standby.
You can set up a power timer to then put it into deep standby

Hi Willo,

Pressed the red button. front of box acknowledged the instruction but nothing happened. Went to Restart options and selected reboot. Told me it was rebooting but left me with a black screen and the message for ages so it had hung. Restarted the box and the front screen shows me it is hanging on the initial Gigablue flash screen so now I am locked out of the box.

The HDD is independent of the O/S so I assume the next step is to flash from USB (I will use 6.0.008 this time) and see if that then recognises the HDD data. Is that right?

I would disconnect the hdd and see if it starts up without it.
If it does then plug it in again and reboot and see what happens.

Hi Willo,

I could not test immediately as the TV was being used (through Humax) so was waiting when I noticed I had ftp access.

The box took ages but it finally did boot back up so presumably it was having problems with the hdd.

When I read the mount section I could see that the USB had been mounted to /media/hdd, bypassing the hdd. So I went into the mount settings and reset it to /media/usb and set the hdd to /media/hdd. Rebooted and once more had to wait a good 10 minutes before it finally booted to BBC 1. When it finally came back the videos were still not visible and the HDD had not mounted.

I have also tried mounting sda1 to /media/newhdd over ssh but I get a response of "Failed: Invalid argument."

I will still open the box to disconnect the HDD, remove it and stick it into my disk mounter to see if I can read it through my Mac but it looks to have failed for some reason.

If my Mac can read it, I will transfer the data and reinitialise the disc in the box to see if that sorts it.

It will be late before I can open the box to disconnect the HDD so this will have to continue tomorrow.

No luck. The Mac will not read it (it is in ext4 which Macs do not recognise) although it recognises it. It will not let me mount it.

Cannot mount it on the Gigablue. So I have to a assume the drive is dead. I have ordered a new one for Monday.

Any ideas on how the get the data off it? I am sure it is all there and reachable.

If you're desperate then you could read through:
Code:
https://www.maketecheasier.com/mount-access-ext4-partition-mac/
However, it would be better to just get it it mounted on the running box.

Thanks Birdman,

I had already found that article. I use VBox VM to run an XP machine for some old software I have so was considering builsding an ubuntu box to see if it would mount it. Alternatively I will try to connect to my Raspberry Pi which has a linux installation on it.

No matter what I do I cannot get it to mount on the box. Do you know any commands I can use to force it?

You can download Ubuntu, install on a bootable usb device, and load from there … no need to actually install it … just that next time you boot it doesn‘t remember any changes, but at least you could see if it finds the HDD

That will happily mount it if the disk is OK.

EDIT: was replying to GeoffatMM

yes if disk is ok possibly disk may have errors considering came from 500 GB HDD recovered from my MacBook Pro. But sorry I am ignorant with reguards to MacBook Pro does hard drive not have sata connection if so why not just fit it internally into the gigablue.

I know how you feel Geoff, mine disappeared last week, may have been a different reason why but still lost them for good.

Maybe not for good Scouse. I followed Twol’s suggestion, made a bootable usb and Ubuntu could see the disk BUT would not mount it as the superblock was corrupted. Searched Google and found this link which gives a great explanation and clear instructions (but read comments as well).

Took under an hour but drive rebuilt and mountable. I am now transferring the recordings to the new drive over ftp but it is slow!

Hi Urie, the drive was in the box when we had a power cut which caused the corruption. Bought new drive for box (now installed) then repaired the original disk to recover data.
