[VU+ Duo2] Odd MAC address issue

Hi all,

I have just come accross what I think may be a bug concerning the MAC addresses displayed for LAN and WLAN in the setup/network/MAC Address screens. When entering either of these screens (LAN or WLAN) it displays the same MAC address. I came accross this because due to a change of kit at my home I now need to use the WLAN connection on my DUO2. On my 4G/LTE modem/router I enabled MAC filtering so only devices with the "allowed" MAC addresses could connect. When using the MAC address shown in this screen, when activating the interface it would not connect. At first I thought it was an issue with the 4g/lte modem/router, it was a new addition, but after double checking the addresses I entered, they were all correct. If I disabled MAC filtering on the router it connected. This counfounded me for awhile until I noticed that under the Menu/Inforation/Network screen, the MAC address shown their for the WLAN interface was completely different to that shown under the network setup screen. So I entered this different mac address into the router and sure enough the DUO2 can now connect with MAC filtering enabled.

So the question is why is the wrong MAC address displayed in the network setup screen for WLAN and why is it the same MAC address as shown in the LAN setup screen.

The receiver does not have a MAC address - its the network adapter that has one. So it is correct the LAN and WLAN adapters will have different MAC addresses.

As mentioned by ronand, MAC addresses are based on network adapter itself whether that be LAN or WLAN.

Your laptop would be in same boat if you look at MAC addresses of it's LAN and WLAN.

You would have to accept both MACs for any potential device that has both LAN and WLAN or, if possible, filter by hostname as that is only thing that would stay the same regardless of connecting via LAN or WLAN.

This also applies to USB WLANs also. If you allow a specific USB WLAN and that develops a fault and you had to replace it with another USB WLAN then that too would have a different MAC address.

But the OP is reporting that:

He specifically says that he can find that Wifi MAC address in another screen. i.e the reported bug is that the MAC addresses are being reported as the same - so he clearly expects them to be different (as they should be).

There is no bug just a misunderstanding. In Menu-Information-Network the correct MAC Address is displayed. I have a feeling that he is looking at "network mac setiings" in the device setup - this is not the mac address but where you can change the mac address. The same suggested address will be shown for either adapter. If the op wishes to change the mac address he may do so.

Thanks for clearing that up. As Birdman pointed out I was confused to see the displayed MAC address for both the LAN and WLAN being displayed. To me it seemed logical to see the WLAN MAC address by going into the network mac settings" menu. I probably should have tweaked that it was to actually used for MAC spoofing, but then again I would have expected it to show the current correct MAC address for that adaptor.

Perhaps some help text mentioning it is for MAC addr spoofind that the displayed MAC address is not the actual MAC address could be added, or some reference to finding the current MAC address in the Information/network menu.

Anyway, thanks to all who replied and for clearing up my missunderstanding.
