[VU+ Duo2] Unit unstable

Hi all,

I have been running 4.2.005 for the past few weeks after a bit of a stint with OpenATV/OpenPli. Overall I prefer the way certain things are done in OpenVIX, however I have been experiencing crashes with the unit. I suspect these may be related to EGPRefesh. What I see is when I get home the unit is in standby mode, but completely unresponsive to any remote control commands. The OpenWebif interface comes up, but once again, none of the options do anything. I can SSH into the unit though and noticed numerous Enigma2 error logs, the most recent one over 2Gb in size and growing as I checked. it seemed as if whatever the issue was it was reoccurring at a great rate and causing things to be written to the log file. This is despite the log settings being set to restrict the log file sizes to 100Mb.

All I could do is a reboot the unit. I did this and it shutdown and restarted ok, so all seemed fine, however as soon as I viewed the recording folder the VIX logo appeared and started to spin and then the unit became unresponsive again to the remote and OpenWebIf interface. All I could do was SSH in a 2nd time and issue a resboot command. On the 3rd reboot it was stable, going to the movies was fine. I ssh'd in to grab a copy of the 2Gb log file to see if I could provide some excerpts from it to attach to this posting, but at some point between the 1st and 2nd reboots the file was deleted, and only old logfiles were retained. I suspect the log settings I had finally kicked in and deleted it, but why only on the 3rd reboot I do not know.

A colleague who also has an E2 unit suggested I set the Full Menu Path settting to none as he experienced random crashes on his unit and once he had applied that change the unit was much more stable, but this was with another E2 branch not OpenVIX. I have done this anyway and will see tonight if the issue has re-occurred.

Lastly, more out of curiosity, why when I do an update does the update screen say OpenPli? Is this because the two distros are working more closely now?

The max log size is implemented by a timer that runs every hour(?), looks for any log file that is over the limit and (in theory) removes data from the beginning of the file such that what is left is the maximum file size.
As I recall, it's unclear what happens when it does this on the current log in terms of what gets left in the log and where the enigma2 process thinks it is writing to within that file.
So that may explain the disappearing logs.

where are you writing your epg too?
The openpli splash screens shows because that is still in your system and can be overwritten by replacing a file during flashing (exact name escapes me)
Me personally, i would delete your hdd mount in openvix, reflash (replacing the file) set back up from scratch, re-initalise your drive and mount it via vix then make sure your epg is writing to media/hdd.
I had niggling problems with a drive in vix that had originally been mounted by another enigma2 OS.

EPG is written to HDD, not flash.

I did do a fresh install of OpenVIX viaa usb drive, so it should have removed any traces of OpenATV / OpenPli. With regard to the OpenPli logo, it is not during start-up, it appears in the lower left corner of the screen when I go into Software Update. I'll get a screenshot of it and attach it to the post here.

The other odd thing is that when it found some updates it just displayed a static message saying the unit is being updated. No progress bar or anything. To add to this, it also turned off the LCD and front panel displays. For all intents it looked as if the unit had crashed. After approx. 10min or so it did reboot, but the lack of a update progress bar is not a good idea imho.

However, now it is running the latest release it does seem more stable...well for now at least.

Hi mate fresh flashing does not re initialise or wipe your hard drive, you have obviously still got user files on the hard drive that are overriding the vix ones.
Unmount the drive, reinitalise it and reboot receiver and check it is now mounted under blu button/vix/mount manager as sda1

Can't see why anything on an HDD should override anything.

Unmount the drive, reinitalise it ...

And hence lose all of your recordings???

Hi all,

since upgrading to 4.2.008 the unit has been stable, so perhaps there were issues with 4.1.005. Then again Full Path Menu is still set to none so I'll set it back to small to see if the instability returns.

With regard to the OpenPLI logo, this is really really embarrassing , but I completely forgot I installed one of the OpenPli skins, and had it active. Reverted to the default skin and no more OpenPLI references. Sorry for throwing this red herring into the ring.

My thoughts on the update procedure still stand though, having no progress indicator that an update is in progress as well as turning off all front panel displays is not filling the user with confidence. You more or less have to hope it will eventually reboot. How long do you wait? What are the consequences if you pull the power thinking the unit has frozen?

Apart from that very happy with OpenVIX.

It does tell you its updating, then the box restarts and you then get the ViX bootlogo up n hey presto all done. What receiver you have? And what skin are you using?
