Hi folks

Can anyone tell me aside from flashing the box, is there an advantage to using a mounted USB stick in the VU Duo rather than using internal HDD? Is it any quicker? What is the optimum set up in this regard?

If you have an internal HDD, no real need to use a USB stick.
Internal HDD will work with EPG, timeshift & so on.
Flash should have enough room for picons depening on your needs.

Is it a good idea to put your picons on flash even if you have enough space ?

It's probably faster to put them on flash, because when your hdd has gone to sleep, it always takes some time for it to start again.
For the same reaston, the EPG display may appear faster from a stick then from hdd.

The EPG is actually held in RAM and only saved to it at shutdown or loaded from it a boot up (or saved at intervals if you specify in settings). No disk activity required normally to scroll through the EPG. Picons should not be stored on the HDD as they are loaded as required and not cached and will cause disk spin-up as @jukkal has indicated.

Sorry Tony found the answer in another post of yours

Alternatively you can telnet into the box and copy the picon folder. I have a backup copy of my picons stored in a folder on my HDD called /backup_picons/picons
What I do is telnet to the box and issue the following commands:

cd /hdd/backup_picons (this places me one directory level above where the picon directory is stored on the HDD)
cp -r picon/ / (this copies the /picon directory and all its subdirectories to the root (/) of my flash)
