Hi,
the boot method of Linux and Windows also did not change much in the last 10 Years but because of much stronger hardware boot times dropped to less than a 3rd. PC got SSD and our Boxes still have slow NAND flash. The box is ready after around 15 seconds because then you can connect through telnet the rest is loading and initializing.
for the money simply use power timer. My Duo2 automatically is in deep standby from 1:00am to 6:25am and then from 7:30am to 4:45pm so its ready to use when I am back home and the few minutes to early really only costs pennies.
